He was baptized in the Lutheran Church. At four years of age he came to America with his parents, making their home in Chicago, Illinois. At twenty years of age he enlisted as a private in the Army of the North, during the days of the Civil War (August 1862). As a member of Company 172, Regiment III Infantry, he saw actual service in the following battles: Champion Hill, Tenn. May 16, 1863, Vickburg, Miss. May 19-22, 1863 and July 4 1863, Benton, Miss. May 7 1864, Columbus, Tenn. Nov. 26, 1864, Franklin, Tenn. Nov. 30, 1864, Nashville, Tenn. Dec. 115-16, 1864, Spanish Fort March 27, and April 8, 1865. On August 7, 1865, he received his honorable discharge at Vicksburg, Miss. In 1868, he was married to Mary Thurnau, three sons were born to this union, Conrad, William, and Henry. Mary died on February 28, 1874. On October 12, 1874, Conrad married Sophia Thurnau, born July 15, 1848. Both sisters were born in Luedersdorf Schaumburg Lippe, Germany. They came to America in 1866 and lived in Chicago, Illinois. In 1887 they moved to Tobias, Nebraska and in 1894 moved to a farm south of Campbell. To this union eight children were born, August, Fred, Louis, John, Edward, Lena (Kumke), Mary (Kumke), Anna (Mattison). Conrad died December 266, 1931 at the age of 89, and Sophia died September 23, 1941 at the age of 93 in Campbell. Edward daughter, Dorothy Perkins, remembers her grandfather Meyer's high top buggy, which had two seats and was drawn by his team of horses. The laprobe was a tanned horse hide with the hair intact and was very warm. She also tells that her grandmother had a spinning wheel which she brought from Germany. There were a few sheep raised on the farm and from that wool she spun yarn for knitting stockings and mittens. Usually the yarn was a dark color, however the mittens always had a colorful red design on the top. All of Conrad's family lived out their lives in Campbell area, as did he and his wife.
