Her father was John Van Sylke, born in Huron, Ontario, Canada; and Matilda Brundage, born in Cleveland, Ohio. She was married three times. The Washington Veterans' Home application she completed had a flaw - it did not require her to name just exactly who she married, just when, where and each marriage's current status. Morris was born March 5, 1861 in Lake County, Indiana. Her father was John Van Sylke, born in Huron, Ontario, Canada; and Matilda Brundage, born in Cleveland, Ohio. She was married three times. The Washington Veterans' Home application she completed had a flaw - it did not require her to name just exactly who she married, just when, where and each marriage's current status. From her file she declared she was first married April 27, 1881 in Wellington, Kansas. This marriage ended in divorce on Jan. 10, 1911 at Colville, WA. Her second marriage was May 1, 1913 in Tacoma, WA. State marriage records show Cora A. Hiff (Iliff?) married Edward R. Broughton. The couple divorced Dec. 27, 1915 in Tacoma. Her last marriage was to Elias Morris on Sep. 7, 1920 in Everett. She received a widow's pension on certificate 1567032 in the amount of $60 a month in 1928. She indicated that she and Elias had no children together. Mr. Morris died in 1934. In 1935, the Veterans Administration rejected her claim on the ground that the veteran did not serve during the War with Spain nor participate in the Philippine Insurrection or Boxer Rebellion. Her claim was also considered and rejected under the Act of June 28, 1934 that the existence of a directly service connected disease or injury was not established prior to the date of her veteran husband's death. A congressional inquiry also looked into her claim in 1935. Mrs. Morris, 86, passed away at Retsil on May 17, 1947. She was buried in the Home Cemetery.
