RUSSELL MERRILL CALLED BY DEATH This community was saddened Saturday by news of the untimely death of Mrs. Cora Merrill, a woman who has taken an active part in community life here for many years. She suffered a stroke shortly after noon last Wednesday and remained in a coma from that time until her death about two o'clock Saturday morning. Early Friday evening she had been taken to the Stromsburg hospital where she appeared to rally somewhat, but passed away peacefully a few hours later. A little over a year ago she had been quite sick with an extremely high blood pressure, but for the past few months had been feeling exceptionally well, and her death came as a distinct shock. As Miss Cora Elizabeth Wolfe she was born Feb. 6, 1885 at Skidmore, Mo., and as a little girl moved with her parents to Blair. Later the family moved to Clarks where she graduated from Clarks high school. On Sept. 20, 1903 her marriage to Joshua Russell Merrill of Silver Creek was solemnized, and they moved to Silver Creek where they have since resided. Mrs. Merrill was a devoted member and leader of the Congregational church. She was president of the W.C.T.U., a member of the Rebekah lodge, local chairman of the Red Cross, member of the Rebekah Kensington, a member of the Cemetery society, and treasurer of the Royal Highlanders. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Merrill home at two o'clock and at the Methodist church at two-thirty. The services were conducted jointly by Rev. Beebe of Silver Creek, and Rev. L.C Fuqua of David City who was pastor of the Congregational church in Silver Creek about twenty years ago, and both were profuse in their praise of Mrs. Merrill as to her work both in and out of church circles. Burial was at the Silver Creek cemetery, pallbearers being T.B. Hutchison, C.W. Mayberger, George Damme, Lynn Smith, George Buchta and Dyo Davis.
