MO d/c 10485 ~~~~~~~ KEROSENE CAN EXPLODES BURNING MOTHER AND BABE A terrible tragedy occurred at 6:20 o'clock Tuesday evening when Mrs. Ethel Smoot, 19 years old, and her 14 month old baby were burned to death, following the explosion of a kerosene can which the mother was using to kindle the fire in the Smoot home at Shelbina. The can contained automobile oil and kerosene. Neighbors across the street saw the smoke and flames issuing from the house and rushed to the aid of the mother and baby. Mrs. Smoot was dead when reached. Her body was in the parlor, where she had run, throwing herself across the bed, while the babe was found in the living room where the explosion occurred. It was alive, but died a few hours later. John Smoot, the husband and father, was in Hunnewell on business and reached home two hours after the fire. Mr. Smoot is a farmer and well driller, well known in the Bethel vicinity where he and his wife were reared. Mrs. Smoot was a daughter of Ed Daugherty of the Burksville vicinity. The Smoots moved to Shelbina about four months ago. Bodies of the mother and baby will be taken today to the home of Luke Smoot, northeast of Shelbyville, and funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at Concord Christian church. The home in which they were living was badly damaged by fire. Shelby County Herald Shelbyville, Missouri March 11, 1925 Page 1 ------- OBITUARY Cora Ethel (Daugherty) Smoot, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emery Daugherty, was born April 26, 1905. She departed this life on March 10, 1925, being at the time of her death 19 years, 10 months and 12 days of age. On Dec. 23, 1923 [sic], she was united in marriage to J. W. Smoot. To this union one child was born, Cora Eileen, who passed away with her mother. Little Cora Eileen was born Dec. 27, 1925 [sic], and was 14 months and 11 days old. The mother and child leave to mourn their death the husband and father, J. W. Smoot, also Mrs. Smoot's father, Emery Daugherty, and her sister, Clytie; one brother, John Daugherty. Mrs. Smoot united with the Harmony Grove Baptist church in August 1923, remaining a faithful member of that body until death took her away. The mother and child were both burned, following the explosion of a can kerosene. The victims only lived a very few minutes after the terrible accident occurred. Thus the deaths came as a sudden shock to the relatives and friends of the deceased. On March 12th the bodies were taken to Concord church near Sigsbee, Mo., where a double funeral service was conducted by Rev. C. R. Brimer of LaGrange, Mo., after which the bodies were laid to rest in the cemetery at that place. The whole community joins in extending sympathy to the heart-broken husband and father, J. W. Smoot, also to the other relatives of Mrs. Smoot and little Eileen. They are gone and their going has left many sad and lonely hears that God alone can heal. CECIL R. BRIMER.
