At the age of 16 years she with her parents and the family, came to the city of St. Paul, and by her happy disposition her fine spirit of goodwill and unselfishness, she won her way into the hearts of all with whom she came in contact, forming friendships in her girlhood which have continued all through her life. Having seriously considered the matter of her life's work and being desirous of rendering some real service to her fellowmen, she determined on nursing as her profession and began her training in one of the Sanitariums in the city of Kearney, from which institution she graduated with honor. In November of 1911 she was joined in marriage to Dr. O. Grothan. For the past three years she has made her home in the city of Los Angeles, California, where some two months ago she was taken ill with what appeared to be a severe cold, but which proved to be something far more serious, developing in a few weeks into that dread disease, Carcinoma of the lungs, and in spite of all skilled physicians and trained nurses could do, her strength kept failing until at 2:30 Tuesday morning January the 17th, wearied with the hopeless struggle, she fell asleep, having reached the age of 40 years, 10 months and 7 days. The only member of the family at her bedside at the time of her going was her brother, alpha, who had reached there a few days before. At the time of her death, her sister, Mrs. Ray Paulsen of Lake Andes, S. D. was racing as fast as the train could travel for the bedside of her greatly loved sister, but death won by a matter of two hours, and she and her brother, with heavy hearts, started for home, with their sister riding in "The Baggage Car Ahead: reaching here on Friday afternoon. Mrs. Johnson leaves to mourn her going, her father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Johnson, four brothers, who according to their ages, are Alvin of St. Paul, Louis of Hollywood, California, Percy of David City and Alpha of St. Paul, one sister, Mrs. Ray Paulsen of Lake Andes, So. Dakota. In addition to these are a great number of relatives and hosts of friends, both in California and her home state, Nebraska. ....the remains were conveyed to Hamilton county, where they were interred in the Kronberg cemetery near Marquette, along side the remains of her mother, who preceded her in death many years ago.
