From the History of Butler/Bremer Counties, Iowa: "Lemuel Carter... is one of the early settlers of Butler County, coming here in 1855 ... His children are: Phoebe, wife of Corban Wygle..." From the History of Butler County, Iowa, 1914: "... Lemuel Wygle is a son of Corbin Wygle. The father was a native of Union County, Ohio, and grew to manhood there. He moved to Iowa in 1854, purchasing a tract of land in Dayton township, Butler County. This he cleared, fenced, and improved and for many years thereafter carried forward the work of its development and cultivation, becoming one of the well known and substantial farmers of this locality..." Bio notes: Corban was a Farmer all his life. Corban and Pheobe owned 160 acres of land in Dayton Twp, Butler Co., Iowa. Corban was initiated in the Grand Lodge of Iowa (Masons) on Feb 4,1868 at the age of 42. The Masonic Symbol is carved on his headstone. Corban died at the age of 72 from complications after being stepped on by some of his milk cows. He was one of the earliest settlers in Butler Co., Iowa. In 1856 the family is found in Des Moines township. By 1860 they are in Dayton township, and someone named Jesse Heath age 60 is living with them. Corban was drafted on October 16, 1864, for 1 year. He was to report on October 21, 1864 to Waterloo, Iowa. At that time, Corban would have been 39 years old. By the time his training was finished, April 1865, the war was over. [Corban's brother-in-law, Robert Burrass, who was married to Phoebe's sister Maria, was also drafted on October 15, 1864 for 1 year and reported to Waterloo, Iowa. He died April 3, 1865 in South Carolina. Phoebe's other brother, Isaiah, had also died in the War in 1862 from disease.] Corban was initiated into the Grand Lodge of Iowa Masons on February 4, 1868, at the age of 42. (The Masonic symbols, the compass and T square, are carved on Corban and Phoebe's headstone.) Corban farmed all his life, owning 160 acres in Section 34, Dayton township, Butler County, Iowa. When Phoebe's father died, they buy 40 acres from Phoebe's brother, James Carter, Executor of Lemuel Carter's will; Phoebe's sister, Maria Burrass, who farms next to Corban and Phoebe, buy the other 40 acres. Corban's son, Lemuel Wygle, has land to the east in Section 35 and his son, Franklin Wygle, has land to the south in Section 2, Jackson township. Richard Hurd, Corban's brother-in-law, married to Corban's sister, Eleanor, is also close by. See the 1880 census record. Corban died February 14, 1898 at the age of 72 from complications after being stepped on by some of his milk cows. His obituary from the Clarksville Star, February 17, 1898, gives more details: "Last Saturday morning Corban Wygle of Dayton Township was so badly injured by some of his cows that he died in less than 48 hours. He was milking a cow and was kicked by either it or the one standing in back of him. The blow knocked him under the cows and the four cows that were fastened in the stanchions where he was, became excited and commenced kicking and stamping him. Hearing the racket, his son-in-law, George Wilson, who was in another part of the stable, investigated the cause. He immediately rescued Mr. Wygle from the infuriated brutes. An examination showed both internal and external injuries. So severe were the former that they caused his death Monday morning. Corban Wygle was born October 19, 1825, and died February 14, 1898 aged 72 years, 3 months, and 25 days. His early days were spent in Marysville, Union County, Ohio. He was married January 28, 1852 to Phebe Carter and they moved to Butler County, Iowa, in the fall of 1854. To them eight children were born: Franklin, Lemuel, Mrs. Allen Mettler of Parkersburg, Mrs. John Trent of Greene, Robert, Mrs. Wilson Mettler of Waverly, Mrs. George Wilson, and James, all of whom and their mother survive him. Mr. Wygle was one of the earliest settlers and widely known throughout the county where he has always been held in the highest esteem. He was a kind friend and a loving husband and father, and true to every trust. His life was always one of honesty and integrity, but not being satisfied in his late years, he accepted the Lord Jesus as His Savior. He died as he lived, quietly and peacefully. The funeral services were held at the home conducted by Rev. W. N. Brown and Rev. J. T. Wyllie. The funeral was conducted under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge of Clarksville and the remains were laid to rest in beautiful Lynwood." A small notice was also printed on the front page of the Evening Gazette, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Tuesday, February 15, 1898, badly misspelling Corban's name: Aged Man's Sad Fate "Root Siding, Iowa, Feb. 15-Corwin Waddle was found in the barn on his farm, two miles south of this place, where he had been kicked and trampled to death by enraged cattle while milking. He was 70 years of age." Corban does not have a will so his son, Robert Wygle, is named Administrator. After Corban's death in 1898, his daughter, Cynthia, and her husband, George Wilson, buy the farm from Phoebe, who lives with them in 1900. Father: Robert I.
