Description	:	Cordella M. Ballard married Grimes Derenberger on September 10, 1890, in Ottumwa, Iowa. On that marriage record, Cordella named her parents as William and Ann (Powell) Ballard. Ballard married Grimes Derenberger on September 10, 1890, in Ottumwa, Iowa. On that marriage record, Cordella named her parents as William and Ann (Powell) Ballard. This would be William M. Ballard and Lucinda Ann Fielding Powell, who were married December 4, 1872, in Wapello County. Iowa. I last see Cordella's husband, Grimes, in the United States census records, in the 1900 Census for Wapello County, Iowa, living with his family. On July 10, 1902, the Ottumwa Semi-Weekly Courier published an article and letter from G.E. Derenberger, son-in-law of William Ballard of South Ottumwa. Mr. Derenberger was working in Vera Cruz, Mexico, as a general foreman of the Midland Bridge Company. Mr. Derenberger was very impressed by the country, and he also wrote: "Since I have been here I have shot a deer and a tiger. I have sent the pelts by express to my wife in Ottumwa, who is the daughter of William Ballard, 128 North Moore street, South Side. I also have many interesting relics which I expect to bring home with me. Among other things I have a parrot, a monkey and some of the finest opals I ever saw." On April 2, 1903, the Ottumwa Semi-Weekly Courier published another article about G.E. Derenberger, the first two sentences in Paragraph One saying: "G.E. Derenberger, who resides at 624 Church street, South Ottumwa, has recently returned from a fourteen months' stay in Old Mexico. He is so well pleased with life as he found it in the Mexican republic that he expects to return in a few days and take up the work which he left, that of a locomotive engineer." I can find nothing further on Grimes Derenberger. --------------- Obituary From Ottumwa Daily Courier, February 19, 1948: Mrs. Cordella Derenberger, 78, former Ottumwan, died at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Moline, Ill., following an extended illness. The daughter of William and Lucinda Ann Ballard, she was born May 7, 1869, in Ottumwa and made her home here until 1941 when she moved to Moline to live with her daughters. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jack Epperly and Mrs. David Stoops, both of Moline; two brothers, Roy C. Ballard, Ottumwa, and W. Ralph Ballard, Chicago, and two sisters, Mrs. Frank Davidson, Albert Lea, Minn., and Mrs. A.D. Guyle, Blakesburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter and a son. The body will arrive in Ottumwa Saturday and will be taken to the Carroll Reece funeral home pending completion of arrangements. --------------- "DERENBERGER SERVICES," From Ottumwa Daily Courier, February 20, 1948: Funeral services for Mrs. Cordella Derenberger, 78, who died Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Moline, Ill., will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Carroll Reece funeral home. The Rev. W.B. Friend of the Pentecostal church will be in charge. Burial will be in the Shaul cemetery.
