Cornelius was born October 22, 1898 in Kabelvaag, Norway, the eldest of three children. After his father's death in 1914, he came to America with this mother and two sisters, Anna and Hjordis. He lived in Black Earth, Wisconsin until 1922. Cornelius then came to Hamlin County, South Dakota. In 1924, Cornelius was united in marriage to Pearl West. Pearl previously taught school for many years. They lived for six years on the Frank Prouty farm. Lois, their only child, preceded them both in death at the age of 46 in 1974. Cornelius and Pearl moved to Sand Point, Idaho in 1929. From there they moved to Alderwood Manor, Washington. Pearl passed away in 1975. On October 21, 1979 Cornelius married Helen West of the Hayti area. They shared 13 year together. Survivors are his beloved wife, Helen West (former Hayti resident), 12 step-children; 94 step grandchildren; and 38 step great-grandchildren. Also 3 grand children and families of Washington State. He was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church all his life and minister for over 50 years. Family notes state that Cornelius was the son John Larson Forshaug Kjelde and Jennie (Jensen). John was a cook on fishing boat and died at sea. Cornelius obtained his citizenship in 1922 at Black Earth, Dane County and always carried it in his pocket.
