Shelbina Democrat, Shelbina, Missouri, 26 Sep 1900, Wed • Page 1, Column 5 Suicide at Leonard. On last Thursday afternoon, Sept. 20, 1900, the dead body of C. R. McDaniel was discovered in an upper room of T. P. Manuel's dwelling house in Leonard. The finding of the body naturally created some excitement. Both Mr. and Mrs. Manuel were away from home at the time and it is supposed he went to that room and killed himself by taking poison. He was anxious to marry Mrs. Kingsley, a widow lady who for the past four years has worked in T. P. Manuel's home, but he met with no encouragement from the lady, and just before his disappearance she refused to marry him, whereupon he remarked that she would regret her decision in a few days. This was about 9 a.m. About 4 p. m. O. A. Manuel went to the room to fix the windows, having some days before been requested to do the work by his brother. Upon entering the room he discovered the body lying face downward with the head partly under the bed. Upon examination of the body it was found to be cold and rigid. Dr. Smith was called but nothing could be done. An inquest was held Thursday night by Coroner Dr. Carson, the following composing the jury — J. N. Stewart, Gene Tuggle, L. L. Garnett, J. W. Hawkins, Brack Perry, J. Y. Howerton. After hearing the evidence a verdict was rendered that deceased came to his death by his own hand. Mr. McDaniel's tongue was burnt and black and his lips looked somewhat blistered or burned; and there were spots, blotches or blisters on the face in several places, probably made by carbolic acid.
