McDaniel near Leonard was made sad and gloomy because the grim monster death entered it and captured its queen, the mother, the wife, the jewel and the sunshine of that home for "what is home without a mother?" Mrs. McDaniel was born July 16, 1847; daughter of Thos G. and Martha J. Magruder who were pioneer settlers of Shelby county. She was married to Cornelius R. McDaniel September 7, 1865, and as the fruits of this marriage she leaves to mourn their loss three sons and four daughters, the youngest daughter being about 8 years of age. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Vassie E. Priest, wife of Silas W. Priest, and Mrs. Allie Singleton, wife of Judge A. E. Singleton, and one brother R. D. Magruder of Jameson, Mo. She joined the Christian church in 1865 and lived a consistent member of same until her death. She was born and raised in this community, and always lived here except 17 years of her life just after her marriage, during which time she lived in Illinois. Her life was such as to exert a great influence for good upon her family, her boys and girls both ever respecting her wise counsels for good. She was loved and admired by all who knew her, and while she is gone her influence for good will live after her. The immediate cause of her early death was pneumonia. She was 52 years, 5 months and 10 days old. Her funeral was preached at Leonard church at 10 a.m. December 27th, by Rev. Elliot of Clarence, after which her remains were interred in the family cemetery on the Col. W. B. Magruder farm. A large concourse of friends attended her funeral and the family have the sympathy of the entire community. While their home is sad and gloomy, yet they mourn not as those who have no hope. There is a silver lining to the clouds. They all may again meet their mother in that sunny land where clouds and sorrows never come, and where sad partings and heartaches will be no more.
