He married Miss Caroline Briggs on 12 Jul 1848 in Deposit, Delaware Co, NY at the home of her parents, George Washington Briggs and Adelade F. Armstrong. Caroline and George had three children: Charles W., Martha Jane and Frank P. George served his country during the Civil War enlisting on 19 Aug 1862 as a Private in in Co C, 9th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry at Austin, Mower Co, MN. His unit was first sent to Birch Coolie and New Ulm, Brown Co, MN to put down Indian uprisings there. George was promoted to Full Corporal On 12 Nov 1863, 41 men belonging to Cos. C and K held up a train and rescued the family of a colored man, which was being sent to Kentucky to be sold. For this, at the instigation of a Missouri officer, they were sent to the guard-house at Jefferson City, but after two months the United States senate was informed of the facts and adopted a resolution demanding of the secretary of war the reason for their detention, whereupon that official ordered their release. The regiment came together for the first time at St. Louis May 26, 1864, and left on the 31st with Sturgis' expedition for the campaign of Mississippi. At the battle of Guntown it charged and routed a body of the enemy. It covered the retirement in good order for 23 miles, when it became separated from the main column and succeeded in reaching Collierville, where it met a train with reinforcements. In this affair the regiment's loss was 286 in killed, wounded and missing, 233 being captured, and of the number 119 died in southern prisons. The adjutant-general of the state, in his report of the affair, says: "That this disastrous undertaking did not result in the entire loss of the whole force, is mainly due to the gallantry of the officers and men of this (9th) regiment." It returned to Memphis, was attached to the 2nd brigade, 1st division, 16th army corps, and was sent to Mississippi in June. It participated in the battle of Tupelo and in the Oxford raid; joined the Missouri campaign in September and October, and was in the battle of Nashville in December, where it was in a series of charges in which many prisoners were taken. In a charge the following day the colors of the 9th were the first planted on the enemy's works, the regiment capturing 2 battleflags and 550 prisoners, to which it added 150 more during the day. It joined in the pursuit of Hood and went into quarters at Eastport, Jan. 9, 1865. It was in the campaign of Mobile and siege of Fort Blakely and Spanish Fort; was then ordered to Montgomery, Ala.; thence to Selma, and on May 19, to Marion. It was mustered out at Fort Snelling, Aug. 24, 1865., MS. George died on 26 Jan 1910 at Osage, Mitchell Co, IA, aged 85 Years 5 Months 5 Days. _____ OBITUARY OSAGE NEWS OSAGE, MITCHELL CO, IA 03 FEB 1910 HENDERSON George W. Henderson was born in Starrucca, Wayne county, Pa., Aug. 21, 1824, and passed away at his home in Osage, Iowa, January 26, 1910, in the 86th year of his life. His childhood and youth were spent in the place of his birth, but in young manhood, he went to Deposit, N.Y., where on the banks of the Delaware, his grandfather, Jesse R. Whitaker, was the earliest settler and possessed a large tract of land. Here Mr. Henderson continued to reside until 1858, when realizing the large opportunities offered by the developing western country, he came to Iowa and settled in Osage. Being a good carpenter, he worked at his trade for about 15 years (except when away in the army) and many are the buildings in and around Osage which he either constructed or helped to build. In 1873, he moved to a farm north east of town where he remained for about 25 years, when he returned to Osage. Here he has made his home ever since with the exception of a year spent with his son, in California, in 1898 and 1899, and again last winter. In 1862, with Lincoln's call for troops he enlisted in the 9th Minnesota Regiment, Co. C., and went to the front, leaving his wife and three little children. He was first sent under Gen Sibley to settle an Indian uprising at New Ulm Minnesota. Later he was sent with the troops to the southland and although engaged in a number of hard fought battles he escaped without being wounded. He was honorably mustered out of the service at the close of the war in 1865. On July 12, 1848, he was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Briggs, at her home in Deposit, N.Y. For more than sixty years Mr. and Mrs. Henderson have been sharing the others burdens and joys, loved and respected by friends and neighbors. Three children were born into their home, two sons, Charles W., of Little Cedar and Frank P. of New Castle, California, and one daughter, Mrs. Martha J. Austin, who with her parents lived together and who with her mother has been with her father, through his sickness. His son, Charles has also been much at his bedside, while Frank who came for his parents last winter and returned with them in April was ready to come if it had been needful or wise. There are also 7 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren, all of whom he was exceedingly fond. It is a remarkable fact that in all of their family this is the first death. Mr. Henderson had been in failing health for some months but had kept around until about 7 weeks ago since which time he has been almost constantly confined to his bed. He was a quiet unassuming man, fond of his home, no loafer, no troubler, but devoted to his family, genial, openhearted and hospitable. For more than 40 years he had been a member of the local Masonic order of which attended the funeral in a body and conducted at the house the services of the order usually held at the grave. The funeral service was held at the home Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. D. I. Coon who came back from Washington for the occasion, and the body was placed in the Osage cemetery.
