At the age of two, Irwin's family moved to Sioux Falls where he attended school until the age of 10 when the family moved to Marion, SD. Irwin graduated from Marion High School in 1945. Following his graduation he entered into the United States Army. While on active duty he served in World War II and the Korean War. He served honorably and was discharged on September 4, 1951 at Fort Lewis, WA. After his military service, Irwin returned to Sioux Falls where he married Esther Elston and began working for Highline construction for nine years. He then married Frances Friedrichs in 1959 and drove a delivery route for Dakota Beverage. Irwin also worked for Eggar Steel for a short period of time and then for Shamrock Plumbing and Heating for ten years before retiring. Irwin was a life member of the Sioux Falls VFW Post 628, the Coodies and also the Sioux Falls American Legion Post 15. Grateful for having shared his life his children, Sharon Niemeyer, Inwood, IA, Robert (Debra) Hepp, Cusseta, GA, Henry "Rick" (Carla) Hepp, Sioux Falls, Glenna (Donald III) Farnsworth, Centerville, SD; sister, Anita (Warren) Nelsen, Sioux Falls; step-children, Frances Larson, Esterville, IA and Donald Gayken and Jackie (Terry) Lund, both of Sioux Falls; 7 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 16 step-grandchildren; and nieces, Penny, Debra and Justine. Irwin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frances; step-daughter, Shirley Hinrichs; step-grandson, Scott Lund; sister, Lorraine Berg; son-in-law, Case Niemeyer; and niece, Linda Haack.
