Gilchrist (1894, 1961) and Jessie O Fay (Goodman) Gilchrist (1897, 1976), in South Dakota, USA, James grew up the son of a farmer / rancher along the banks of South Dakota's James River. Gilchrist (1894, 1961) and Jessie O Fay (Goodman) Gilchrist (1897, 1976), in South Dakota, USA, James grew up the son of a farmer / rancher along the banks of South Dakota's James River. There, James was known by his nickname: 'Bud'. When he was 7, the Stock Market crash of 1929 resulted in the 'Great Depression' of the 1930s. During this time James lived in Cambria, Brown, South Dakota. From the 1940 US census, James lived on Tacoma Park road, Cambria. According to James personal testimony, he enlisted in the US Army around 16 years of age, (e.g. circa 1938). While on leave in New York, James met and married, (June 1942), his first wife, Emma Jane Brown of New Jersey. After the Dec 7, 1941 attack on the Pearl Harbor naval base in Hawaii, James took part in military action in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal (7 Aug 1942), Lae, New Guinea (4 Sep 1943), Guam (19 Jul 1944), and Leyte, Philippines (20 Oct 1944). During these engagements, James operated as a US Army Ranger. James first son, James Manuel Brown Thompson (b. 3 Nov 1944, ), was born in Newark, Essex, New Jersey. After Discharge in 1946 at Newark, NJ, James worked as an 'appliance repairman'. James and Emma moved from New Jersey to Aberdeen, Brown County, South Dakota in 1947. James and Emma separated in 1949 and divorced in 1951. James left South Dakota for Seattle, Washington, where he went to work for Boeing as an engine mechanic. While in Seattle, James met Josephine Marzluff. The couple moved to Portland, Oregon, where James entered the new field of 'industrial air conditioning'. While living in a duplex in the Sellwood neighborhood of SE Portland, James and Josephine had their daughter, Ginger Ann Gilchrist, in 1952. James and Josephine married in 1953. In Dec 1954, they had their son, Lawrence. In 1955, the couple moved to a house on SE Mall and 39th St. They had their son, Jeffrey, in 1956. James father, Harry D. Gilchrist, passed in 1961. In Dec 1966, the Gilchrist family in SE Portland moved to Canby, Oregon, (located about 25 miles due South). James's mother, Jessie O Fay (Goodman) Gilchrist, passed in 1976. In 1979, at age 57, James left the company he had been with for 20 years, to start his own industrial air conditioning business with a partner. In 1987, James retired to his Canby home. In 1994, James separated from Josephine and the couple divorced in 1995. After his separation, James moved to Richey, Montana to reside with his sister, Ione P (Gilchrist) Kenney. James convalesced at the South Dakota Veteran's hospital, where he died on January 2, 2004. Epilog: around 1995, while cleaning up the Canby residence, an olive drab fabric pouch was discovered bearing the name 'James E Gilchrist'. Inside were three WW II medals, the WW II Victory medal, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star . . .
