His funeral will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 22nd at the United Church of Christ, Columbia with Rev. Allan Schoonover officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Visitation will be 1-7 p.m. Friday at Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 South Main St., Aberdeen with a public prayer service being held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church Saturday. Eldon E. "Jack" Gilchrist was born December 18, 1919 at Tacoma Park to Harry "Pete" and Jessie (Goodman) Gilchrist. He attended school at Groton and graduated from Groton High School in 1939 where he was the first King of the Carnival of Silver Skates. He married Millicent Honey on August 3, 1941 at Groton, SD. They farmed in the Columbia/Tacoma Park area. Millicent died on April 5, 1982. Jack began his farming venture by raising the first broad breasted turkeys in the area. He farmed with his father and later his four sons. Jack was a member of the United Church of Christ. He was known to many as "Trapper Jack", having trapped the Jim River from his youth until this last year when his health prevented him from doing so. Dancing was second nature to Jack, from the early days when he walked from his farm to dance to the big bands at the Tacoma Park Dance Pavilion, to dancing four nights a week while wintering in Texas, to dancing at the Elks and most recently the VFW and Eagles in Aberdeen. Jack rarely missed a day of pinochle playing with his fellow cronies in Columbia and instilled the love of card playing in his children. Jack enjoyed watching his grandchildren in all their activities, especially their ballgames and dance recitals. Jack faced his illness with strength and a positive attitude, never once complaining, always grateful for his many blessings. He loved life and the land and his family is thankful that he was able to complete his life at the farm. Grateful for having shared his life are one daughter, Galynn (Jerry) Nichols of Aberdeen, SD; four sons, Eldon (Suzanne) Gilchrist, Jan (Nancy) Gilchrist, Terry (Lorie) Gilchrist, all of Columbia, SD and Todd (Stacey) Gilchrist of Tucson, AZ; two brothers, Bud Gilchrist of Aberdeen, SD and Chuck Gilchrist of Great Falls, MT; one sister, Ione Kenny of Richey, MT and eleven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Millicent. Casket bearers will be Wilbur Albrecht, Dennis Mitchell, Clark Craig, Randy Wilke, Dwight Buntrock and Derald James. Honorary casket bearers will be all of his friends.
