State Trooper Roger Harris identified the accident victim as Cowell C. Davis, E 815 Sanson. The trooper said Davis and Richard R. Wilcox, 17, E 324 Heroy, were thrown from a car when it rolled over after the driver, James L. Wilcox, 42, E 324 Heroy, swerved to miss a porcupine on the highway. Harris said the car landed on its top and rolled over twice, coming to a rest on the roadway. The Wilcox youth was treated for head cuts and body bruises. The trooper said that minutes after the Wilcox car rolled over, a car driven by Jewel B. Raiey, 45, B 2018 1/2 Eastern, smashed into the Wilcox car which was upside down on the roadway. Neither Raiey nor the elder Wilcox were injured, the trooper said. The Davis boy, a student at Hamilton School, is survived by his mother, Mrs. Anton Wurtz, at the home, E 815 Sanson; his father, Charles E. Davis; a brother, Bryan Wurtz; two sisters, Carrie and Brenda Davis, and his grandmother, Mrs. Jessie McKinney, all of Spokane. Davis, E 815 Sanson, an eight grader at Hamilton School, was killed early last Saturday when he was thrown from a car in which he was riding as the car swerved to avoid a porcupine. The effect of his sudden death upon his classmates is reported in this letter from one of them: Dear Spokanites: I'm sure most of the people of Spokane have heard of the fatal accident in which Cowell Davis was killed. I would like to tell you something about this 14-year-old boy. Cal came to Hamilton School on Sept. 3. This was his first year at this school. He had a happy, carefree manner and we all thought of him as just "another one of us" after a few weeks. He participated in football, and he teased the girls and joked with the boys. He had the loudest laugh in the room and he was a happy-go-lucky kid, never down in the mouth about anything. He was the life of the class. On Friday, Oct. 11, we saw Cal for the last time. We didn't know it then, but by the next night most of us did know. But Friday after school, with everyone shouting "Goodbye, see you later" and "have a happy weenend" we figured everything would be at school the following Monday. And we couldn't quite take it when we discovered he would never again occupy his old seat. I know all of this, because I was in that room and I knew him as well as most of the others. When I walked into our room Monday, Oct. 14, I couldn't help but look at Cal's chair. Part of me couldn't believe that we would never see Cal Davis again, and the other part of me was kind of mixed up and didn't know what to think. As all of the other students arrived and sat down, our homeroom teacher talked to us about Cal. Then we collected a flower fund and signed a sympathy card. All were solemn faced, even the rowdy boys. A few of the girls cried and, if some stranger had looked in on us, he would have thought we had lost our best friend, which was about the truth. A few of us were allowed to attend the funeral. Everyone was miserable. Remembrance Pleged Though life must go on, our room will never be the same. We'll all have an empty place in our hearts for him, and no one will ever fill that place. This thing when Cal Davis was in was purely an accident, but many are not accidents. So, whenever you are driving, Spokanites, think about Cal Davis, age 14, his classmates, his friends, and his family.
