Description	:	Born in Huntingdon county Pennsylvania to William and Mary (Ramey) Beyer, at the age of 20 he enlists in the Union Army. He enlisted in Company D, Iowa 27th Infantry Volunteers on August 21st, 1862 to serve three years "or during the war". He was discharged from service on the 26th of June 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky. having served almost the full three years. At enlistment he was five feet nine 1/2 inches high, fair complexion, brown eyes, slight hair and by occupation when enrolled, a farmer. Note: Apparently he was wounded, but I can find no record to substantiate... Note: Apparently he was wounded, but I can find no record to substantiate that information. On October 10, 1866, he was married to Miss Maria D. McCrum in Clayton County, Iowa. She is about 16 years of age and he is about 24. He is a farmer. Jabez and Maria are the parents of 4 children. One daughter Mable Bertha who is the oldest child and 3 sons, Charles E., Arthur Edwin, and Ira Rollen Beyer. On November 10th, 1878 Maria dies, "she is about 28 years old". Her husband is left with four relatively young children and March 15th, 1881 he marries Miss Eunice Kate Fleck who is about 38 years old. A year later their first child is born on March 18, 1882, but dies in infancy only four days later. They will have two more children, Henry Otley Beyer, born June 13, 1883 and Mary Laura Beyer born Feb. 15, 1887.
