MORRISSEY John Bernard Morrissey, 25 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Morrissey of 721 Wilson avenue, died Monday morning in Washington, D. C., of injuries incurred when a gas heater exploded in the apartment of a friend he was visiting Sunday night. Morrissey had spent Christmas day and the week following with his sister, Veronica, while he was on furlough from Paris Island, S. C., where he was stationed with the marine corps. A friend who was with him when the accident occured was still unconscious Monday, but it is not known whether he recovered or not. Born in Ames July 25, 1903, Morrissey attended the Ames public schools, with the exception of three years he spent in school at Marion. In 1922 he left Ames and went to California, and remained at Long Beach for two years. Returning to Ames in 1924 he established the Morrissey Dress club, a dry cleaning shop, which he operated until early in 1927. During the school years of 1924-25 adn 1925-26, he was a student in the engineering division of Iowa State college, and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. In April of 1927 he enlisted in the marines and was sent to the non-commissioned officers' school at Paris Island. At the time of his death he had attained the rank of corporal. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made, but the body will probably arrive here Saturday, accompanied by Veronica Morrissey. MORRISSEY FUNERAL SERVICES ON MONDAY Funeral services for John Bernard Morrissey, 25 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Morrissey of 721 Wilson avenue, will be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Cecelia's Catholic church, and will be conducted by the Rev. J. M. Campbell. Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery. Morrissey died Monday in New York City, without recovering consciousness, after he and a friend were overcome by gas escaping from a defective heater. Morrissey and his friend, who recovered later, had taken the room together while Morrissey was on a visit in New York. When the retired last Sunday night they turned on the heater on account of the coldness of the room, and were found uncouncious the next morning. At the time of his death, Morrissey was on furlough from Paris Island, S. C., where he was stationed in the marine corps. After spending Christmas week with his sister Veronica in Washington D. C., he had gone to visit friends in New York City.
