Description	:	John S Bartholf was born in Ramapo, New Jersey. His father was Stephanus Bertholf son of Hendrick Bertholf son of Rev Guiliaem Bertholf. At the age of only 16, John was a soldier in the Revolutionary War serving as a private in the Bergen County Regiment commanded by Col. Teunis Dey. He served at various times from 1776 to 1782. His first tour was as a substitute for his father Stephen. John assisted at the building of Fort Lee on the Hudson River and was at the Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey being en route... Read More	John S Bartholf was born in Ramapo, New Jersey. His father was Stephanus Bertholf son of Hendrick Bertholf son of Rev Guiliaem Bertholf. At the age of only 16, John was a soldier in the Revolutionary War serving as a private in the Bergen County Regiment commanded by Col. Teunis Dey. He served at various times from 1776 to 1782. His first tour was as a substitute for his father Stephen. John assisted at the building of Fort Lee on the Hudson River and was at the Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey being en route with other Bergen companies from the Ponds to New Brunswick. He served at various times under Captains Crines Van Houten, John Huyler, John Outwater, Joseph Beard, and Lieut. Ryerson. Corporal John Bartholf was in Captain Uzal Meeker's Troop of Light Dragoons from Bergen County in the Pennsylvania Insurrection of 1794. He was in the First Squadron, Second Regiment --Calvary. He mustered in as a Private Sep 6, 1794 and 10 days later was promoted to 1st Corp. There were 31 in the Regiment. They were discharged Dec 25, 1794. He was placed on the pension roll in Washington November 15, 1833 (Case 2804 File 5810, Vol A p 49 Index) and drew his pension of $26.66 per annum until his death. His wife Susannah then drew his pension until her death. In the record he reported that he served a great many more times than he could remember due to the lapse of time. In the documents John signed his name as Bertholf while his son signed as a witness John Bartholf. The will of John S is recorded at Hackensack, NJ John was a farmer and had his place near Oakland, New Jersey. His old homestead was still standing in 1902 and was occupied by a descendant. He married Susannah Storms in August 1786 at the Ponds Church, New Jersey. She was born April 23, 1769 and died November 15, 1848. Westervelt and Martin Beam The portraits of John and his wife were in the possession of a descendant in Rochester New York when the Bertholf/Bartholf family papers were compiled.
