Description	:	Stephanus was the son of Hendrick Bertholf and Marretje Ter Huyne who were married in 1707 His father Hendrick was born April 6, 1686 in Bergen, NJ His mother Marretje was baptized Oct 11, 1656 in Amerfest, L.I. Stephanus inherited his father’s farm via Hendrick’s will. It was said to be in Yawpo now Oakland, NJ. He followed the occupation of a farmer until he passed on. Stephanus inherited his father’s farm via Hendrick’s will. It was said to be in Yawpo now Oakland, NJ. He followed the occupation of a farmer until he passed on. She was buried in the HopperFarm Cemetery inscription “76 years 28 months 27days” Her parents were Hendrick Mandeville and Elizabeth Vreeland Stephen served in the Revolution enlisting in Warwick, New Jersey The following list of men from the Town of Warwick who served in the Revolution was compiled by Miss Genevieve VanDuzer, using Ruttenber's History and New York in the Revolution. December 20, 1760 in Ramapo, NJ and died January 5, 1846 in Franklin, New Jersey as can be seen above he served in the Revolution at a young age. John married Susannah Storms in August 1786 in the Ponds Church. She was born April 23, 1769 and passed away November 15, 1848 John S Bertholf received from his father in his will “the place he lives in on down to lands of Benjamin Romie, also one acre of meadow off homestead; also 1/2 of the Cross Lot purchased from Parker Amboy; 1/2 of the ploughing land and 1/2 of the woodland; also a negro boy for whom he is to pay 40 pounds” 3 Elizabeth was born in 1763 she married James Bogart/Bogert and twice more “Elizabeth Bogart” received 40 pounds in her father’s will 4 David b 1766 and died January 8, 1851 in Oakland. New Jersey and is buried in the Hopper Farm David married Catherine Storms who was born in 1777 and died June 19. 1864.He was buried in the Hopper Farm Cemetery inscription age 85-2-29 Catherine was buried in the Hopper Farm Cemetery as well Cemetery inscription “age 87-2-5” David received from his father in his will the homestead and farm and other 1/2 lands; “ The said 2 sons paying the other legacies”. to Henry , Elizabeth Bogart, Mary Alyea and Sarah The residue to be divided between all the children after wife’s decease 5 Martha (Mary) was born in 1772 and married Peter Alyea She also received 40 pounds 6 Sara was born in 1775 and married James Van Blarcom. She also received 40 pounds 7 Henry S (again) b 1779 married Rachel Quackenbush. He received 200 pounds In essence the girls all received 40 pounds from their father when he passed away The will begins “ March 18, 1797. Bertholf , Stephen of Franklin Township, Bergen Co will of Wife Maria, real and personal, while widow” The will ends “Executors —sons John and David, and son-in-law James Bogart; witnesses —William Colfax, Bridget Demera, Jacob Storms Proved Mar 20, 1800” Lib 38, p 533; file 3148 B The will was found in “New Jersey Post Revolutionary Documents Calendar of Wills—1796-1800” page 29 The Bertholf papers record that “the homestead is not now in existence, but the old burying ground remains, although it is a state of decay. He and his wife are both buried there and a stone marks the grave of the latter.” His will is recorded at Trenton, NJ in Liber. 28. P 533 and was recorded March 26, 1800.
