Description	:	Norbert Arbach, 89, of Pierre and formerly of Hoven, passed away Monday, October 8, 2018 at Avera Maryhouse, Pierre. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 1:00 p.m. CDT, Saturday, October 13, 2018 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Pierre, with Fr. Joseph Holzhauser presiding. Visitation was held one-hour prior to the service. Interment will be 12:00 p.m. MDT, Monday, October 15, 2018 at the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis. On a cold, we’re assuming, December day, the 15th to be exact in 1928 a baby boy was born to Mike and Rose (Hoffmann) Arbach. Norbert grew up to be a hardworking, helpful, card playing, naughty at times, loving, puzzle solving, fishing, farming and family man. On September 8, 1953, he married Mary Joan Titgen. To this union four children were born. Grandkids and great grandkids! How fun and enjoyable they were to Norbert. Nothing made him happier than when they were visiting or they were around them. He would act just like a kid, usually getting himself into trouble, while playing with them. During Norbert’s lifetime, he served in the army in the Korean War as a gunner from 1951-1953. He was on the Walworth County ASCS Board of Commissioners from 1975-1983 and from 1981-1983 he served as chairman of the committee. He served on the Hoven Co-op Board of Directors, was a Legion Commander, and was a lifetime member of St. Antony’s Cathedral in Hoven. Apart from his family, Norbert also loved farming, especially after the boys were older and were able to help. But, if he had an accident, like hitting his head, you didn’t laugh at him, otherwise a swift kick in the britches was coming your way! Water witching was a talent of his, many people would call and ask for his assistance finding water on their properties. He loved to fish. Every spring he looked forward to fishing the walleye spawn with his daughters. He was always waiting for an invitation to go boating with Tom and Laurie. He loved to play cards. Playing cards, everyone was the “best”, but in Norbert’s eyes, he was always the “better” player! He loved to play golf. One of our funniest memories was when Dad and Ron were enjoying a game of golf together. Dad decided to exit the golf cart before Ron had stopped. Ron was turning the corner and Dad was propelled out of the cart with his nose about 2 inches off the ground for about 10 steps before he regained his balance to upright. Ron was beside himself, busting a gut laughing at Dad! Dad just had that little "grin of his" on his face..... In later years, he enjoyed a daily routine of going to Lowry every morning, having coffee and catching up with his buddies. In September of 2012, Norbert and Mary Joan retired from the farm, bought a new home and moved to Pierre to be closer to health care facilities and to be closer to their daughter Laurie, so close in fact that they lived across the street from her. Laurie would keep an ever-watchful eye over them, keeping everyone informed of what was happening. Nobert is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Joan of Pierre; sons: David (Charmaine Mckee) of Aberdeen and Kurt (Marti) of Hoven; daughters: Cindy (Ron) Mittleider of Silt, CO and Laurie Rausch (Tom Bishop) of Pierre; brother, Clarence Arbach of Highmore; sisters: Laurene Kaiser of Hoven and Betty Brozel of Billings, MT; sister-in-law, Janice Arbach Sayler of Eureka; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Jerome and Paul; and sisters: Viola Breen and Clara Rader. The family would like to recognize and thank Tom Bishop for the countless hours he spent helping dad. Tom was always available to help when assistance was needed. A special thank you to Don Kaiser who spent time with Dad at dialysis appointments, making his long treatments pass more quickly. Dad was forever grateful. Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Norbert’s arrangements.
