Ahlstrom and Marion Dillingham Ahlstrom. He retired in 1982 from the DuPont Co., where he held management positions in marketing and management training. Ahlstrom and Marion Dillingham Ahlstrom. He retired in 1982 from the DuPont Co., where he held management positions in marketing and management training. Previously he was associated with the Bigelow and Dowse Co. of Boston and the New York Wire Cloth Co. of York, Pa. John also retired as a captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was on active duty during World War II and Korea. Based aboard the Escort Carrier Petrof Bay, his squadron supported landings on Palau, Leyte, Luzon, Iwo Jima and participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Williams College in 1939, and received an MA degree at Duke University in 1940. He also later attended Harvard University for his Ph.D. He taught history and Latin at St. Albans School in Washington, D.C., before joining the U.S. Navy in August 1941. In 1943 he married Virginia Thurston of Dennis, Cape Cod, who died in 1969. He is survived by his second wife, Doris Porter Ahlstrom, whom he married in 1972. Also surviving are two daughters,; three stepsons; one grandson; two granddaughters; two step-granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren. John was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Church in West Chester, Pa. He was a member of the West Chester Country Club and the Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Del. He was an enthusiastic golfer throughout his lifetime and also enjoyed traveling with Doris during his retirement. John loved history, especially the history of Cape Cod due to ancestral ties to the Dillingham House built in Brewster, Mass., in 1660 by Captain John Dillingham. John and his entire family spent many vacations at the Cape house during his lifetime. Services will be private and the interment will be in the ancient Dillingham family cemetery in Brewster, Cape Cod, Mass., at the convenience of the family.
