Reference: Iowa WPA burials ***************** Decatur County Journal April 23, l903 'OBITUARY' JOHN P. FINLEY, eldest son of JOHN P. and MARIA L. FINLEY, was born in Pigua, Ohio, Sept. l7, l837, and died in Gehring, Neb., April l0, l903, aged 65 years, 6 months and 23 days. In l839 his father's family came to Iowa and after having lived at New London, Mt. Pleasant and Bloomfield, finally settled in Leon, Iowa, in the spring of l854. June 5, l86l, he enlisted in Co. D 4 Iowa Infantry,and was orderly sergeant of his company; was discharged Sept. 2, l862 by reason of gunshot wounds received at the battle of Pea Ridge which caused the loss of his right hand. Feb. 29, l894 he was appointed by Abraham Lincoln to act as assistant quarter-master of volunteers with the rank of Captain. He was married Jan. 9, l865 to JENNIE C. MILLER, who died June l6, l877,leaving three children. In the spring of l884 he moved to Nebraska finally locating at Gehring, Scotts Bluff County, and in March l894, was married to LETTIE W. EWING who died two years later. He was a loyal member of the G.A.R. being commander of Gehring Post No. 265 at the time of his death, and was buried with military honors at Gehring, April l4, l903. Children: Harry of Muncie, Indiana, Eloise Finley and Helen Daily of Leon At time of his death. Family surviving him: brother Charles and Mrs. T. S. Arnold. He died of heart disease.
