Description	:	John Waymon Edwards, age 68, of Pittsburg, died Friday, May 27, 1988, in the Hospice Unit of Mt, Carmel Medical Center. He had been in ill health for the past year and entered the hospital on May 8. He was born Jan. 12, 1920, in Ozark, Ark, to John H. and Mellie L. Bumpers Edwards. He grew up in Pittsburg and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1939 where he excelled in football, baseball and track. He also was king of the yearbook in 1939. He had been in ill health for the past year and entered the hospital on May 8. He was born Jan. 12, 1920, in Ozark, Ark, to John H. and Mellie L. Bumpers Edwards. He grew up in Pittsburg and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1939 where he excelled in football, baseball and track. He also was king of the yearbook in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant from 1942 to 1946. He then worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons for 22 years. During that time he lived and worked in Leavenworth; Lompoc, Calif.; El Reno, Okla.; Springfield, Mo. and Yukon, Okla. He retired as a captain in 1970. In 1962, Mr. Edwards received a personal recognition commendation from President John F. Kennedy for service as a Federal Marshall in Oxford, Miss. He married Esther Berry Edwards on May 31, 1943, and they were blessed with a daughter, Betty. Esther died March 18, 1984. He later married Shirley B. Sackett on March 31, 1985, in Yukon, Okla. She survives at the home. Mr. Edwards was a member of the First Christian Church, the Federal Retirees Association, the Pittsburg American Legion Post No. 64, the Moose Lodge and the King Solomon Masonic Lodge of Leavenworth. Survivors include one daughter, Betty Corn of Yukon, Okla.; one step-daughter, Vicki Gladson of Fort Worth, Texas; one sister, Dorothy Resnar of Pittsburg; one brother, Guy Edwards of Fallbrook, Calif. and two grandchildren. Services will be on Tuesday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home with Dr. Wayne Black of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Pittsburg, KS. where the Pittsburg American Legion Post will provide the flag-folding ceremony. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and the Pittsburg Masonic Lodge No. 187 A.F. & A.M. will give masonic rites at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
