Mr Brooks married 1st Dorothy Watson, daughter of James Franklin Watson Sr and his wife, who was also his cousin, Margaret Watson. Dorothy Watson Brooks did not live long after marriage and Mr Brooks married 2nd Taphenas Lipscomb. Mr Brooks was a son of William Elisha Brooks, Revolutionary Patriot. He was born in what was later Edgefield County, where his father settled after the Revolution and came up to this section to work for his brother Capt John Wesley Brooks at Scotch Cross. A descendant used to say that the younger brother agreed to work a year for a young mare owned by the older brother. He had a rough time of it in clearing up fresh land both for his brother and for himself, something he had undertaken as he liked the country. After making his first corn crop, he built a log crib, stored his corn and went back to his fathers home to spend the winter. When he came back in the spring and got within sight of his corn crib, he thought the roof was completely covered with buzzards sitting there and was nonplussed to imagine a reason for it. When he got close to the crib, he saw it was a drove of wild turkeys. They knew corn was inside and wanted to stand by even if they could not get at it. That was not long after the turn of the 18th century Stanmore Butler Brooks finally settled the place on the old road from Scotch Cross to Cambridge, the place long owned by the late Mark Fellers and known now as the Fellers Place. In addition to his older brother, Capt J Wesley Brooks at Scotch Cross, he had another brother William Butler Brooks who built the house long owned be the late George Taylor and now owned by A E Taylor and on the same old road. Stanmore Butler Brooks and his wife, Taphenous Lipscomb Brooks had: a) Ann Elizabeth Brooks married Dr Joseph S Marshall, son of Capt George Marshall and his 2nd wife, Jane Carson Marshall. b) Thomas Lipscomb Brooks married Miss Eliza Narcissa Jordan, daughter of Nathan Jordan and Mary Miles Nordan of what is now our Verdery section. c) Thomas Brooks died in Confederate service d) William E Brooks died in infancy and is buried in Lipscomb Burying Ground (1833-1833) e) Mary (Molly) Brooks married Milton H Coleman (his 3rd wife) f) Lavina Brooks married 1st William White of Mississippi but a member of the Abbeville White family and 2nd A S Townes, of Greenville g) Matilda (Tillie) Brooks, never married h) Octavia Brooks died young i) Edna Brooks married Dr J H McCall of Quitman Georgia j) Stanmore Pickens Brooks married Ella Townes of Greenville Dec 1866, Daughter of Col G Frank Townes
