SKETCH OF HIS LIFE - Stanmore Pickens Brooks was born January 20, 1845 at the Brooks Homestead, now known as Fellers Place between Scotch Cross and Ninety Six and was therefore in his 78th year. He was the 3rd son and youngest child of Capt Stanmore Butler Brooks and Tephanas Lipscomb Brooks, daughter of Thos. and Elizabeth Lipscomb. The father of Capt Stanmore Butler Brooks and the grandfather of Stanmore Pickens Brooks was Elisha Brooks of Newberry and Nancy Butler of Edgefield County. Elisha Brooks was a Revolutionary War Lieutenant and his wife was a sister of Capt William Butler, a prominent figure in the Revolution and later a member of Congress. Their father, the aged Capt James Butler and thirty other Whigs were the victims of the noted Mount Willing Massacre at the hands of Bloody Bill Cunningham during the Revolution. Stanmore Pickens Brooks was regarded as a delicate lad by his family and was allowed to spend most of his youth out of doors on his father's plantation. He attended the school of the community and was sent to the Hodges Institute in Greenwood (the building now owned by Brewer Normal Institute) in 1860. Though too young for enlistment then and regarded as not strong enough when the age limit was lowered, he chafed for an opportunity to enter service, it is said, by his associates, and when two years later he was sent to Greenville with the late B F McKellar Sr to enter Furman University, he did not remain more than a few months before he wrote his father that he was leaving for North Carolina with McKellar and others to join his kinsman, Col Tom Lipscomb and there he remained as courier in the Confederate service until the end of the war. On Dec 24, 1866, he married to Miss Ella Townes of Greenville, eldest daughter of Col G F Townes and Anne E (Sloan) Townes of Greenville. Mr Brooks, after a few years spent with his parents at the old home began farming on a tract of land near what is now Breezewood, the home being known as "Cottage Hill". He and Mrs Brooks lived there with a brief interruption of a year in Greenville and a year at the Connie Maxwell Orphanage until they came to Greenwood 25 years ago. With no children of their own, it was their delight and pleasure to have around them their brothers and sisters and the nieces and nephews of both and they were father and mother to many of them. Shortly after coming to Greenwood, Mr Brooks built the home on East Cromwell Street which has been occupied ever since. He was one of the organizers of the first Greenwood Lumber company which was later consolidated with the Greenwood Bobbin Factory. After that consolidation, Mr Brooks retired from active business. He served one term as a member of the Greenwood City Council and one term as Trustee of the city schools but never held any other public office. He was a Trustee of Furman University from 1893 to 1895. Until two years ago, he had been Attendance Officer for the Greenwood public schools and had rendered most efficient service in that position. Mr Brooks had been a member of the Baptist denomination almost from his youth. He joined at Mt Moriah and was for many years a Deacon at that church. He was one of the prime movers to organize the South Main Street Baptist Church of Greenwood and had been a Deacon of that church since its institution.
