William Niell DeHaven, born in Philadelphia, August 24, 1820; married Miss Warmsley, of Missouri; second wife, Miss Dodge, and removed to Caldwell county, Mississippi, in 1840. In 1852, he crossed the plains to California; settled first near Marysville, from thence to Plumas County, where he engaged in mercantile and mining pursuits. While there was elected clerk of the county; afterwards removed to Lassen county, engaged in agriculture and filled the office of deputy sheriff. In 1856 settled in Chico, Butte County, California. In the spring of 1869 he purchased the material of "The Courant" (Republican) and "The Caucasian" (Democratic) papers, and uniting them, established the "Northern Enterprise," an independent paper, which he edited until his death, with the exception of one year he spent in the Legislature of California. He migrated to Mississippi in 1840, and went to Marysville, California in 1852. In 1856, he settled in Chico, Butte Co., CA where he published a newspaper, the "Northern Enterprise". He served one term in the Legislature. "Pennsylvanian by birth, upon his arrival in Plumas county, engaged at hotel-keeping at Onion valley. From there he went to Spanish Ranch, in the service of Isaac J. Harvey, having charge of the caravansary at that place. He was the unconditional-union candidate in 1861 for county clerk, against L.G. Traugh, republican, and John D. Goodwin, democratic, over both of whom he was victorious. He served until the spring of 1864, when he was succeeded by W.W. Kellogg. Captain De Haven was a warm personal friend of both the old clerks, Harbison and Goodwin, and made them his deputies, the latter appointment being distasteful to his radical supporters. After the close of his term, he clerked at Hosselkus & Harvey at Taylorville. He finally went to Chico, and became one of the proprietors of the Chico Enterprise.
