He passed away on July 7, 2007 near Nelson, Nebraska at the age of 54 years, 3 months and 27 days, due to a car accident. He was a ward of the Lutheran Family Social Services for one year. In April 1954 he came to make his home with his adoptive parents, Eldrick and Elsie Grummert. Craig was baptized into the Lutheran Faith while an infant in Omaha and was confirmed at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Superior in June of 1968. He attended rural Fairview, Nelson and Superior Public Schools. He was engaged in farming with his Dad for several years and then he went in to Construction work building bridges, roads, Pamida store and ethanol plants. He spent several years working at Grain elevators. One summer he worked in the potato fields and hay fields in the Sand Hills; but his special love was working at livestock sale barns. He preferred outdoor work and enjoyed all outdoor sports. He was an avid fan of car racing, rodeos, and Big Red football. The highlights of his life were the vacations he took with his parents and some of the trips included other family members. These trips took him to all the states in the union including Alaska and Hawaii, also to Mexico, Canada, Germany and Australia. Many people knew Craig, if not by name they recognized his broad smile. Lately he had become the mainstay for some of his elderly relatives which were depending on him for assistance. His heart was full of compassion for everyone he met, willing to give his last dollar to anyone he thought less fortunate than he. He was united in marriage to Betty Melvin in 1974. To this union one daughter was born. He is survived by his parents, Eldrick and Elsie, of Nelson, Nebraska; daughter, Cindy Luft and husband Jerry of Lincoln, Nebraska; 3 grandchildren, Christopher, Cassandra and Jocelyn; aunts and uncles, Milvern and Aileen Grummert of Glenvil, Nebraska, Roger and Norma Nunnenkamp of Oregon, Dorothy Reeve of Aurora, Nebraska and Edith Rausher of Nelson, Nebraska; and a host of friends. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at 2:00 PM from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior, Nebraska with officiating. Music was "Rhinestone Cowboy" and "Mansion Over the Hilltop" sung by Tom Jensen and congregational hymns, "Beautiful Savior" and "Softly and Tenderly" with Carlita Erickson as organist. Pallbearers were Mark Lynch, Rodney Lynch, Daniel Grummert, Terry Grummert, Michael Grummert and Allen Schiermeyer. Honorary Pallbearers were Barry Kort, Steve Becker, Curtis Schiermeyer and Phil Peters. Interment was in the Nelson Cemetery at Nelson, Nebraska. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, Nebraska was in charge of the arrangements.
