He was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Moravia, Iowa, to Ray and Elsie Matherly Coltrain. He married Gretchen J. "Dutch" Vest June 8, 1941. She preceded him in death Jan. 5, 1998. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from the Iowa Army National Guard with 21 years of service. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and a lifetime member of Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie # 114. Surviving is his son, Duane (Marilyn) Coltrain of Mission, Texas; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Marcine Coltrain of Ottumwa and Adrienne Coltrain of Whidbey Island, Wash.; a sister, Peggy Hebert of Acton, Maine. He was preceded in death by two sons, Donald and Billy Joe Coltrain; five brothers, Floyd, Delmar, Verlin, Jack and Jerry Coltrain; five sisters, Dorothy Emanuel, Roberta Coltrain, Joanne Coltrain, Connie Ray and Doris Johnson. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Albert officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Published in the Ottumwa Daily Courier from 2/10/2009 - 2/11/2009
