Cynthia Reeder, (Nee Hancock), the subject of this sketch was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, June 16, 1806, and died Aug. 3, 1894. She spent her early years in that county, where she made the acquaintance of the family from which she afterward selected her companion for life. She, with her parents, removed to Wayne county, Ind., when she was about twenty years old; here she grew to young woman hood, and on the 15th of May, 1823, was married to Jonathan Reeder, the marriage ceremony having been performed by Rev. Samuel Taylor, of Wayne county, Ind. After a brief sojourn in Wayne county, the newly married couple anxious to make a start in the world in an independent way, removed to Henry county, Ind., where they remained until the year 1834. With a desire to better their condition, they then moved to Madison county, where they entered the land and settled north of Frankton, on which the "Howard" cemetery was laid out and where their child, Clinton C., was the first one to be buried and where now rest the remains of the parents, side by side. There the family grew and strengthened with the years and together they cleared out a large farm where they were in condition to enjoy life. By this time a number of the children were grown, three of the oldest were girls and all married; respectively to J. C., Jas. E., and Elijah Ring, the three following being boys, now young men and the great desire of the father and mother to give them a chance in the race of life, to that end they sold the farm and removed to Howard county. During the latter years they lived with their daughter, Mrs. Catherine Ring. Cynthia Reeder was a lineal descendant of the Hancock's of Revolutionary fame. Her father having served in the revolutionary war and a brother in the war of 1812, thus it will be seen that there was a strain of patriotic blood running through the veins of the family, which caused them to be loyal to the flag under any and all circumstances. The husband and father was a Virginian by birth and when the flag of our county was assailed, Jonathan Reeder was among the first to enlist in its defense. Enlisting in Co. "I" 21st Ind. Vols., afterwards the 1st Ind. Heavy Artillery. He was in many hard fought battles and was wounded at the battle of Baton Rouge, La. He served three years, veteranized, and was mustered out of the service and came home in 1866. Three of his sons were impelled by a love of country to enlist. Walter S. in the 75th, Ind. Vols.; Thomas B. in the 19th, Ind. and Samuel T. in the 71st, Ind. Vols., afterwards changed to 6th, Ind. Cav. Thus the father although seventy-five years old and three sons served valiantly from the beginning to the closing of the war. For over fifty years Mrs. Reeder and her husband were constant members of the M. E. church and lived consistent Christians until the day of their death, the father having died Dec. 20, 1877. They were the parents of eleven children, six of whom were boys and five girls. Three boys and two girls now living. Mrs. Reeder had lived to see nearly one hundred great-grandchildren and a number of great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Katharine Ring, Walter S. and T. B.
