Just as the sheaves were ripening for the garner on July 6, 1905, the life of Mrs. Cynthia J. McCready Smith passed peacefully away in the arms of a loving Savior. Her disease was pronounced progressive anemia. She had been in ill health for the past eighteen months, but for the last two weeks her suffering was great, and her patient Christian fortitude showed her willing submission to a Divine providence. The subject of this sketch was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, March 28, 1841. She was united in marriage to Robert smith October 22, 1857. When quite young she united with the Bethel Presbyterian Church in Columbiana county. They moved to Ashland county in 1860, where they lived 45 years. From there they moved to their farm, where they lived since. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were one of the three families that organized and took an active part in the erection of the Stone Church, where they both were active members. Wm. Stone's and Wm. Sheller's were the other two. She leaves a devoted husband, two sons and two daughters to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother, besides four brothers and two sisters. The brothers are: Dr. J.A. McCready and J.O. McCready of Pittsburg, Pa., Dr. R.C. McCready of Allegheny City, Pa, and George F. McCready of Wellsville, O; the sisters are: Mrs. Lizzie Paul of Wellsville, O, and Mrs. Rilla Grafton of Wichita, Kansas. Another sister, Mrs. Margaret Cameron of Iowa, preceded her to the grave about four years ago. She was a member of the Lutheran Church at Jeromesville, having transferred her membership from the stone Church a few years ago, and has gone to rest from her labors and reap her reward. She was a very good neighbor, and lived strictly up to the Golden Rule--To do unto your neighbors' as you would that they should do unto you. She will be sadly missed, and the husband and children have the sympathy of their many sorrowing friends in there irreparable loss. While it is very sad to part with wife and mother, console yourselves with the thought that your loss is her gain, and that "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord." As her little grandson said, "Don't cry, mamma, God will take care of her." So give thanks to God that in His infinite goodness He spared the companion of your youthful days as you traveled along life's rugged journey together for forty seven years. You now have the satisfaction of Knowing that everything was done that could possible be done to alleviate her suffering. One of the sons remarked, "If mother had to die, it was nice she could sleep so peacefully away, as she said just before she died, "I want to go to sleep." The funeral was largely attended, and an able discourse was preached by Rev. Harris of Rowsburg from Corinthians I --55,56,57. Two brothers from Pittsburg, Pa, and a brother and sister from Wellsville, O., one son, Homer Smith and family, and Mrs. Hershey from Mansfield were the relatives from a distance. Mr. Smith and children desire to return their sincere thanks to their neighbors for the kindness shown them during the sickness and death of their devoted wife and mother, also to the choir and to those who furnished the beautiful flowers. Mrs. Robert Smith died at the home, above town, on Thursday noon, after a short illness from anemia or a lack of blood, at the age of 64 years. The funeral was held at the home on Sunday at 2 o'clock, and the services were conducted by Rev. Harris of Rowsburg, the Lutheran pastor. the remains were taken to the Strickland cemetery, near the infirmary, for burial. Her three brothers, Mr. McCready of Wellsville, Dr. McCready of Pittsburg, Pa., and Dr. McCready of Allegheny, Pa., were here to attend the funeral. they returned home on Monday morning.
