Cyrene Boyd Dawson was born in Clarke Co., Ohio, on May 4th, 1835, and was the youngest of twelve children, two of whom survive her, Henry Dawson, of Lamar, Mo., and Mrs. Wm. Brown, of Irwin, Mo. She was married to John Coffey on May 4th, 1854. To this union ten children were born, six of whom are living. Cyrene Boyd Dawson was born in Clarke Co., Ohio, on May 4th, 1835, and was the youngest of twelve children, two of whom survive her, Henry Dawson, of Lamar, Mo., and Mrs. Wm. Brown, of Irwin, Mo. She was married to John Coffey on May 4th, 1854. To this union ten children were born, six of whom are living. The husband and children were all present when the mother passed away except one, Jerry, who is in the far away state of Washington. In the spring of 1866 the deceased, with her husband and family, removed from Ohio and settled on the farm where they have lived ever since. This journey was made in a wagon and occupied about five weeks. Here in this then wild country she helped to build a home. They lived in the wagon until logs could be cut from which a rude building was constructed. The family lived in this cabin until logs were taken to a mill and sawed into lumber and a house built. Mrs. Coffey was first taken ill about four years ago when she suffered a stroke of paralysis and has never been a well woman since that time though she was not considered seriously ill until about a week before her death when other complications set in and the end was seen to be near at hand. In this stroke she partially lost the use of her speech which was a great annoyance to her but she was a patient, uncomplaining sufferer. All that medical skill and the loving care of husband and children, with the aid of kind neighbors, could do was done, but to no avail, as the disease had a firm hold. She passed peacefully away at ten minutes before seven o'clock on Monday evening, Oct. 15. She was a woman of many sterling qualities, a loving and dutiful wife and mother. She was a kind and accommodating neighbor. To know her was to love her. The funeral took place on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., from the house. She was laid to rest in the little Prairie Chapel cemetery by the side of her baby who preceded her some years. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Locke.
