Read More	Civil War Veteran - Union Army - Company "H" 9th Illinois Infantry Regt. - 1st Lt. - 4-19-1861/9-30-1864 ------ From a 1911 Nance County, Nebraska, newspaper clipping file, transcribed by Linda Berney: Mr. Cyrus Hinton Gilmore was born at Macomb, MacDonough County, Illinois, January 18th, 1835. He continued his residence in the State of Illinois until the civil War broke out, when on April 25th, 1861, he enlisted in Company H, Ninth Ill. regiment for three months service, and was Sergeant of Captain John W. Kitchell. At the expiration of three months, he re-enlisted on July 28th, 1861 for three years, or during the war. At this same time, he was promoted to First Lieutenant of Company H. of the Ninth Illinois, afterward known as the "Blood Ninth," because of the severe fighting thru which it passed. On January 18th, 1865, Lieutenant Gilmore received another promotion, this time to the captaincy, but because of the close of the war, he never actually assumed the duties of Captain. At the close of the war, he was offered a commission in the regular army, but caring more for the pursuits of peace than for war, he returned to his native state, and became a private citizen. On the 4th day of January, 1866 he was married to Miss Mary E. Standring at Hillsboro, Illinois. With his companion, he moved to Fremont, Nebraska, in 1880, and a year later to Fullerton. Thus for nearly 46 years Mr. Gilmore and his wife have trod life's pathway together, and for 31 years of that time, they have resided among the friends and neighbors who participate in these last solemn obsequies. Eight children were born to this union. Two died in infancy; four sons and two daughters remain, all of whom are present today. In the month of June, 1889, under the pastorate of Rev. G. W. Martin, Mr. Gilmore united with the Methodist Church of this city, and continued a faithful member in that church until the day of his death. He has been a member of the Masonic Order since before the war, and his brother Masons assemble to pay their tribute of respect. On last Tuesday morning at an early hour, surrounded by his entire family, save one, he passed peacefully into the future, receiving from the hands of the Great Commander of all the earth, his final discharge.
