Description	:	D. Gwen Ogden, age 85 of Geneva, passed away on February 2, 2011, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva. Gwen was born to Wilard Ernest and Francel Airth Barr Philson on November 29, 1925, on a farm southeast of Fairmont. At three, she moved to a farm west of York. Gwen Ogden, age 85 of Geneva, passed away on February 2, 2011, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva. Gwen was born to Wilard Ernest and Francel Airth Barr Philson on November 29, 1925, on a farm southeast of Fairmont. At three, she moved to a farm west of York. Gwen attended District No. 13 in York County through the eighth grade. She graduated from York High School in May, 1943. She attended York College summer school and taught at District No. 25 in York Count for one year. She married Robert Norman Ogden in Belleville, Kan., of October 29, 1943. Gwen met Norm one evening as she and a friend went to visit their grandmothers in Fairmont. They decided to walk downtown and started talking to Norm. He had ridden his bike to town to get the mail, and they started visiting. He walked her home, asked her for a date, and after dating for a year, they eloped. Although Grew was only 17 years old, she was teaching at the time, so they married over teacher's convention. They moved to Norm's grandmother's farm south of Fairmont on Highway 81 where they lived for 50 years. Norm and Gwen were proud to be honored with a 100 year farm award from Ak-Sar-Ben. On this farm, they lovingly raised three daughters, Mary, Frances and Margaret. Throughout the years, she was a member of the Federated Church of Fairmont; First Congregational United Church of Christ of Geneva and the United Methodist Church of Fairmont. She taught Sunday school and Bible school at both the Federated Church and the First congregational United Church of Christ. She also belonged to the women's groups of the churches she attended. Gwen was a charter member of the Geneva Community Grange where she held various offices. She was also a charter member of the Geneva Township Extension Club. In addition, Gwen and a group of friends gathered for over 50 years to play Bridge. Gwen was an avid gardener and loved caring for her flowers. She especially looked forward to the harvest season. Known as not only an accomplished cook and homemaker, she was a working farm wife, milking cows, raising chickens as well as assisting with the irrigation and fieldwork. She prepared daily lunches for Norm and the field hands. The young men enjoyed working for Norm and especially looked forward to Gwen's delicious cooking. The more they praised her and the more they ate--the more she cooked. Although the farm busy, they traveled using complimentary tickets their daughter Fran got for them as a flight attendant.Hawaii, Greece, Rome, Las Vegas and Alaska were among her travel adventures. Norm and Gwen moved off the farm in 1994. When Norm's health began to decline, Gwen cared for him in their home until he died in 2002. They spent eight memorable years in their Fairmont house where Gwen opened her home and heart to her family, reveling in their visits. Gwen lived at Heritage Crossings for the last six years, and she often referred to the people there as her "Heritage family." Gwen played a pivotal role in the lives of her grandchildren. Initially, she hesitated at the moniker "Grandma," but after her oldest grandson, Chad, deemed her "Granny," all she could do was smile, and it became a badge of honor. She loved being "Granny" to Chad, Travis, Candice, Jonathan, and Tommy; and Gwen would do anything to enhance their lives. All of her grandchildren have such special memories of their granny. Gwen is preceded in death by her husband, Norman; parents, and brother Myrvan Philson. She is survived by daughters, Mary (Paul) Novak of Littleton, Colo.; Frances (Terry) Johnson of Chicago, Ill.; and Margaret (Tom) Boyer of Butte; sister, Gen (Dwight) Johnson; brothers, Maurice (Von) Philson, Clinton (Ann) Philson; brother-in-law, John (Jo) Ogden; grandchildren, Chad (Sandy) Novak, Travis Johnson, Candice Boyer, Jonathan Boyer and Thomas Boyer-Kendrick; great-grandchildren, Samantha and Jack Novak, Ryan and Lauren Boyer, Max and Mason Boyer-Kendrick. Memorial services were conducted from the Heritage Crossings Chapel on February 7 with the Rev. Karla Sheffy officiating. Nancy Jo Galusha accompanied Jonathan Boyer and Lauren Boyer, who sang "Amazing Grace," Jonathan Boyer, who sang "Come to Jesus" and the congregation who sang "In the Garden." Private family graveside services were held at the Fairmont Public Cemetery, Fairmont. Casket bearers were Chad Novak, Travis Johnson, Jonathan Boyer, Thomas Boyer-Kendrick, Candice Boyer and Tom Novak. The Nebraska Signal February 9th, 2011 page 3.
