Her 80-year-son, Sidney T. Ellis of Hampton, said of his 102-year-old mother: "The Lord must have thought she was all right, he kept her here this long." Sidney alone survives of her four children, all sons. Her twin sister, Ida D. Scarborough of Norfolk, died at age 98. Two brothers are living of her 12 siblings. Raised in the farming family of John Whitfield Deuell and Nanie Cora Pond, Mrs. Ellis married telephone lineman John Thomas Ellis in 1914. They moved to Wakefield, where her husband worked in a peanut factory and Mrs. Ellis took care of their four sons. Her husband got work as a boilermaker at the Newport News shipyard, and they moved to 28th Street in Newport News. It was 1930, the year the family had electricity and indoor plumbing for the first time. Sidney remembered as a boy his mother sewing shirts and pants from cotton flour sacks printed in colorful patterns. "A lot of people made clothes out of them. "She made all our clothes for a while," Sidney said. "People didn't make much then. Seven dollars a week, maybe." Mrs. Ellis was sickly for years as a mother, undergoing surgery for various problems, Sidney said. Her husband died in 1959. After that "she seemed to kind of get herself together - she had to carry on, I reckon." She began living with her adult sons, moving to her youngest son's home in Newport News to another's home in Rescue, and back to Newport News and Hampton. She often prepared Sunday lunches for 25 or 30 family members. "She enjoyed cooking," Sidney said. "You don't find that country cooking no more." In her later years, she took walks and sometimes went for car rides. In a newspaper story covering the twins' 96th birthday party, Mrs. Ellis had said, "Nothing else for you to do but enjoy yourself." During the last four years she lived at the convalescent center. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Other survivors are two brothers, Elvin Deuell of Newport News and Herman Deuell of Hampton; 16 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and 44 great-great-grandchildren. Other sons were James Herbert Ellis, Robert Lee Ellis and Woodrow Wilson Ellis. Family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home by Dr. James E. White. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Peninsula Funeral Home.
