She was born in rural Pittsburg, Kansas on February 12, 1925 to Ellen Hanson Smith and Roy Samuel Smith. She was the third child in a family of five children. She attended Cherokee High School. On Sept 26, 1942 married Samuel W. Van Gorden, Jr. She was a dedicated wife and mother, taking great pleasure in her home, family and friends. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for fifty years. She was a lifelong Pittsburg area resident until this year. She is survived by two children, Janice S. Van Gorden Warner and husband Don Warner of Poinciana, FL and (COL) Paul D. Van Gorden and wife Patricia L. Coulter Van Gorden of Olathe, KS one grandson Paul D. Van Gorden and wife Kate Van Gorden of Olathe, KS and three granddaughters Lisa Kisro and husband Andrew Row of San Marcos, TX, Laurie Kisro Otzen and husband Lorenz Otzen of Flagstaff, AZ and Gillian Van Gorden Martiny and husband Caleb Martiny of Montgomery, AL and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Samuel W. Van Gorden, Jr., sister Betty Irene Naccarato and brother Roy (Buddy) Smith. She was a resident of Garden Terrace at Overland Park, KS for the past three months and in the last week of her life in the care of Grace Hospice. The family is grateful to all her caregivers for their compassion, patience and care. A private family internment service will be held on Saturday, Sept 10 at the Garden of Memories cemetery, Pittsburg, Ks. The family suggests memorials to Grace Hospice of Kansas City or to the Red Cross, Joplin Relief Effort. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th Street, Pittsburg, KS 66762. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, KS.
