Funeral services were held Saturday, March 15, 11 a.m. at the Anthon Church of Christ with Pastor John green and Pastor Ted Sieck officiating. Cheryl Banks served as pianist. Grandsons, Paul, Andrew and Alex Morf sang a vocal trio. Pallbearers were Steve Evans, Jay Hinkhouse, Pat Pierce, Kenny Carrington, Bryan O'Day and Dano Morf. Honorary pallbearers were Joan Goodburn Robbins, Frank Hoppe, Sam Corrie, Miriam Johnson Jensen, David Smith and Lana Juelfs Cunningham. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon, under direction of Armstrong Funeral Home. Madge was born August 14, 1909, on a farm northwest of Anthon, the daughter of Arthur Eugene and Leona Mae Jones Thompson. The family moved to Anthon when Madge was four years old. She graduated from the Anthon High School in 1926 and attended Morningside College. She married Martin Petersen June 1, 1940 in her parents' home. the couple lived for a year at Idlewilde farm in rural Kingsley, then moved to a farm east of Cushing where they lived until 1976 when they retired to Anthon. In 2001 Madge moved to Mount Vernon to be near her family. Next to her family, Madge's greatest passion was teaching, and her pupils were very dear to her. She taught for a total of 29 years, first in rural one-room schools in Miller and summit townships and in the Bronson Public Schools. After her marriage she retired for several years to be a farmer's wife and raise a family, but she returned to teaching in 1953 in the Cushing schools. She retired a second time in 1971 to devote more time to being a grandmother. Madge also loved her piano. As a high school girl she played for the silent movies. Over the years she played for church, school and community programs, for the Legion Auxiliary and for her family, and she played for residents of Hallmark Care Center up until a few months before her death. She was a member of the Anthon Church of Christ, Alpha Delta kappa, an international teacher's sorority, the Valley Rebekah Lodge of Anthon, and PEO Chapter DT. Survivors include her daughter, Middie Mae and her husband Darrel Morf of Mount Vernon; three grandsons, Paul Morf and wife Jennifer of Mount Vernon; Andrew Morf and wife Reagan of Cedar Rapids; and Alex Morf of San Francisco; four great-granddaughters, Nellie, Abbie, Betsy and Ingrid Morf; one nephew, A.M. "Bud" Thompson and wife Alice of Richland, Washington, great nephews and nieces, cousins and many many students. She was preceded by her parents, her husband in 1991, a brother, Mayne, a sister, Mildred, and two nieces, Vivian Poulos and Velma Griffith.
