Description	:	Dale Anthony Deam was born in Hampton, Iowa October 28, 1919, the youngest of ten children. Read More	Dale Anthony Deam was born in Hampton, Iowa October 28, 1919, the youngest of ten children. He attended 8 years of elementary education in a one room schoolhouse located a quarter mile from the home farm, and graduated from Hampton High School in 1937. During the entire four years in high school he was never allowed to participate in any school activity because his labors were always needed on the farm since various siblings had married and left. Dale was the only son to graduate high school. His years of working on the farm were always without compensation of any kind and his frustration grew during the ensuing years but the Depression afforded no jobs in a farming community and the few listed were for menial jobs that would not support living away from home. Dale passed away December 30, 2011 in Sheridan WY. Dale entered the Army February 6, 1942. After Basic Training in Texas he was stationed in Camp Stewart, Georgia and sent to Massachusetts where he was in the Coast Artillery Radar Maintenance alternating between various coastal positions with Radar, Searchlight, 40mm gun. While in the Waltham location he met the total love of his life Jackie who was a Girl Scout leader and had allotted her scouts ten minutes to look over the Army installation perimeter. However, the Sergeant in charge of the installation, one Dale Deam, did not agree and the two exchanged words with Jackie getting the last, the scouts following her ten minute observation time. Not a good beginning to be sure. But from this meeting a friendship developed that continued two years and Dale was sent back to Camp Stewart and then Fort Jackson. The friendship turned to admitted love and Dale sent Jackie's engagement ring via the mail. Only AFTER the ring arrived would Jackie be allowed to accompany Dale to Iowa should he get a Delay Enroute before shipping overseas.. The transfer from Coast Artillery to Infantry came when all coastal positions were closed down during the Battle of the Bulge and overnight transfers made to Fort Jackson for six weeks infantry training and instant replacement status overseas. He was given a meager 12 days Delay Enroute and took Jackie to meet Iowa family during that time. Dale shipped overseas aboard The Queen Mary which landed at Glasgow, Scotland. As each man disembarked each man carried a duffel bag (not his own) and in this simple way every duffel bag was removed from the ship (15,000 men per crossing). The dock at Glasgow was at the base of a very high land area. From the dock they carried the bags to the top of the hill and they boarded trains for Southhampton, England. Upon arrival there after an all night train ride they had breakfast in a huge warehouse and immediately boarded boats to LeHavre, France. At LeHavre troops boarded troop trains affectionately called, "Forty or Eights" The designation described the capacity of the boxcar—it could accommodate forty soldiers or eight horses. The trains were coupled not like the freight cars in the United States but rather by chains which permitted much more swaying and thus many derailments. When a train derailed the soldiers all piled out and pushed it aside bodily. They then boarded and dispersed through the remaining cars slightly changing the ratio to anything from "Fifty or Fifty-five or Whatever to Eights." The capacity remained the same for the horses but the soldiers numbers were vastly affected. They slept on the floor head to foot getting whatever sleep they could, as the boxcars filled with America's finest sped to the front lines. Destination Ruhr River. Dale wrote:" We'd come such a distance, almost non-stop from ship to train to boxcar to truck on foot in the darkness to a company where I would become a replacement. New territory, raging battle, not a familiar face, no associations had been made. Talk about on your own! When I finally made my way to my company I knew that the miniscule infantry training I had received could be forgotten. This was the real thing and I would adapt and learn now that I was part of the combat infantry. The foot soldier was, is, and always will be the backbone of the military. Dale served as Communications Chief Sergeant during the crossing of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers into Germany. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, European Ribbon, African Middle Eastern Ribbon, with two Bronze Service Stars, The Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Bronze Star. Dale and Jackie were married July 15, 1945 in Boston. He returned to Fort Leonard Wood and discharged in November. He applied through the G.I. Bill for on the job training in an auto dealership and his talents for ingenuity, invention, and mechanical ability immediately recognized. As Jackie always said, "He was born a genius and been improving ever since." After a number of years in the trade he went into teacher training and began his teaching career at Silver Lake Regional High School in Massachusetts. During this time he entered Fitchburg College and received his BS degree the most difficult way possible, teaching day, college nights, summers, Saturdays. It was a very proud day to see him graduate. The story of Dale's life is a total one of caring for his fellow man. He and Jackie had no children of their own, but together they had a multitude of kids who loved and respected them. He and Jackie founded the Sundowners of Massachusetts, a group of kids that travelled the United States each summer learning about their country, self-sufficiency, doing for others, living under the most primitive camping conditions . Dale directed the building of the Sundowner camp, cutting timbers from his own trees, milling, and building with parent help. He served for years on the Pembroke Auxiliary Police, volunteered his time to every neighbor who needed help, brought troublesome kids home and worked with them until they were on the right path to a decent future. He never knew a child that could not be turned around in behavior, never gave up when everyone else in the school system said a child just could not be saved, would not accept defeat and kept insisting the child just needed an extra someone to believe in him, not give up on him. And it worked all through the 21 years of teaching. At the same time Jackie was bringing home the troublemaker, the belligerent, the difficult, the suspicious child who trusted no one, and each Friday Dale would ask her "What kid are we saving this week-end?" He organized the travel caravans to bring Jackie's elementary kids to their Maine property to camp with the Maine kids and opened up the pool a week earlier, getting the ice off so all could use it. Each year Massachusetts kids come out to visit, tents up in the yard, Dale organizing trips to the Y courtesy Jay Maginnis. Those kids came out to help Dale and Jackie celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. For their 65th Dale had promised Jackie he would dance with her, and dance he did, oxygen line carefully overseen by Jay Godley, with Jim Niner on guitar playing, "Waltz Across Texas With Me" Dale read two paragraphs from letters he had written in 1944 . In one he wrote, "I have loved you from the very start" and in the second, "If anyone says a guy is crazy for getting married, I will just say the happiest time in my life has been since July 15 and nobody can tell me different." He turned to Jackie and said, "And now, and incredible, wonderful 65 years, I love you still." Jackie's remarks included, "Every success in my life, in teaching, working with kids, establishing the Sundowners, was made possible only because of Dale. He is and always has been the wind beneath my wings. " And now his workshop is silent. The whir of the saw blades is quiet, the drill press no longer hums, and the lineup of projects to be made is stilled forever. But everywhere are the wonderful pieces of furniture you made for us and for all those others you chose to receive your work. Never took an order, decided on the recipient. Treasure those pieces. The Master Craftsman has another job helping "Upstairs" running the Carpentry Shop. No finer, gentler, more decent man ever lived. He made this earth a better place for all of us. His was a heart that encompassed love for every human being he encountered. He believed so strongly that a man's final judgment by the Lord is his answer to the question, "What did you do for your fellow man on earth?." Would that all of us be able to answer the question as Dale has done. Dale is survived by his wife Jacqueline (Nazzaro) Deam and sister in law Gloria (Nazzaro) Picariello both of Banner, WY along with numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life for Dale will be held at the family home in Banner at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2011. Inurnment will be at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2011 at the Black Hills National Cemetery with Military Honors.
