Dale was born Feb. 19, 1918, to Frank and Dorthy (Fett) Galles in Broadview. This is where he spent the first 14 years of his life, in his own words: "Great childhood. Galles passed away on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, with his beloved sweetheart, Joan, of over 68 years, by his side. Dale was born Feb. 19, 1918, to Frank and Dorthy (Fett) Galles in Broadview. This is where he spent the first 14 years of his life, in his own words: "Great childhood. Dogs, ponies, bicycles, baseballs, bats, gloves and tennis court in our backyard." In 1932 his family moved to Billings where he attended high school. He played on the basketball team and he played in the orchestra where he was quite the accomplished cello player thanks to his folks having spent the Broadview years driving him the 30 miles from Broadview to Billings every two weeks for lessons! He was also elected student body president and had a morning Gazette route. When he was only 17 years old he went to work at Midland Bank on the checking account ledger. He had the pleasure of being invited to Missoula for the annual high school spring track meet by Fred Moulton, who had him stay at the Phi Delta Theta House. That fall he pledged Phi Delt, worked in the University Business office and washed dishes for his board! During his university years he was house president, played cello in the orchestra and made the Grizzly basketball team! To extend his college experience he decided to go to law school. He was initiated into the International Legal Honor Society of Phi Delta Phi's University of Montana — Clayberg Inn, in 1940. In 1942 he graduated with a double major in LL.B (Bachelor of Law) and business administration. Later that year he joined the Navy and was ordered to report to Cornell University at Ithaca, N.Y., on Dec. 1, 1942. It was here he decided to join Anti-Submarine Warfare rather than the Judge Advocate as he desired to be on a small craft and learn seamanship. He was stationed at Cape May, N.J. He spent time patrolling for enemy subs off the mouth of the Delaware River, until his boat was assigned to the British Isles for the buildup of the invasion of Europe. Dale was the 1st Officer on an escort boat for the great Normandy invasion, and later became Commander. After the war Dale returned to Billing and began his practice of law. It was during these early law years that the stunning Joan Harwood caught his eye! On Sept. 21, 1947, the two of them were married and began a wonderful life time together that would span over six decades. Although they were never to be blessed with children of their own, they blessed many lives with their kindness and genuine caring for all human beings! Dogs were a huge part of Dale's life. He loved all his four legged companions and even late into his life he could be seen out walking his current buddy everyday no matter the weather or his health issues. In 1954 Dale had the distinguishing honor of being appointed Deputy U.S. Attorney for the Billings District. After four years in this position he returned once again to private practice with his father in law Judge Ben Harwood. In his later law years he became very involved with the Barristers. He enjoyed all his law buddies and especially appreciated the new young lawyers coming into the field. Dale was always very community minded. He was a long time member of Kiwanis (where he held the apple selling record for years and years), the Boy Scouts, the Symphony (he never lost his love of music), the Petroleum Club, Elks Club and the Yellowstone Country Club. Dale was also very athletic and he sure enjoyed his sports. He was a member of the Billings Semi Pro Baseball team before transitioning into golf and later pool! He would never ride in a golf cart as he felt it was the walking that was keeping him young. The year he could no longer walk the course is the year he hung up his clubs, but picked up a pool cue and became a regular on the American Legion Pool Leagues. He loved to say how he was the best one eyed pool player in town as he had become blind in one eye. He could be found any pool league day at the Legion, enjoying his fellow pool players and sipping on a cold Old Milwaukee. This he did well into his 90's! Early winter of 2011, he took a bad fall that resulted in a broken wrist, this was the catalyst that led him and Joan to become residents of Billings Health and Rehab. Although fate would have this vibrant, dashing man spending his final years in a nursing home, he never lost his since of humor nor love of life. He continued to be enjoyed and appreciated for his wit and humor by all he met. Dale is proceeded in death by his parents Frank and Dorthy Galles and his brother Dean Galles. He is survived by his wife, Joan Harwood Galles; sister-in law Lillian Galles; and many nieces and nephews.
