Read More	Dale Fordyce Stradling Dale Fordyce Stradling passed away on July 3 after a courageous battle with cancer that lasted 20 months. He was born April 5, 1930, in Yakima, Wash., to Howard and Lucy Stradling. He was raised in Prosser, Wash., where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduating from Prosser High School in 1948, he received a bachelor of arts from Eastern Washington State College, a master's degree in education from Eastern and did his P.h.D. program in geography at the University of Nebraska. He married Esther Ruud in 1953 and to this union, five children were born. After spending two years stationed in Boston, Mass., with the U.S. Coast Guard, serving on the icebreaker Sorrell from 1952 to 1954, Dale returned to Washington where he taught school at Prosser for one year, and Edwall for two years before moving to Lincoln, Neb., for graduate school. Dale was highly regarded by many longtime friends and colleagues for his outstanding athleticism. Valued as a high-scoring basketball player during his four years at Prosser High School, Dale went on to play basketball for four years at Eastern Washington State College. For the past 30 years he has played tennis. He won numerous individual and team tennis trophies, and participated in both state and national tournaments. In 1982, Dale married Teiko Kubota. Teiko currently teaches Japanese at EWU. He and Teiko were members of the Central Park Racquet Club and the Spokane Club. Dale continued playing tennis, several times a week, until his illness prevented him from doing so. He also enjoyed bird watching, gardening and fishing. Dale taught geography at Portland State College for five years before he joined the faculty at EWSC in 1965. In his 33 years as faculty member he served as advisor to the Natural Science Education Program. He is credited with developing the earth science education program. His seminal research on Pacific Northwest geography and geomorphology has been published in national and international journals. In addition to serving for 16 years as chairman of Eastern's geography and anthropology departments, he served on numerous professional committees and organizations and was president of Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi honor societies. Dale was awarded EWU's coveted Trustees Medal in 1991. In 1997, he journey to Ghana, West Africa, as part of a grant to study coastal erosion. He frequently led trips and gave presentations on the subject of our local region's glaciations and ice age floods, including the Lake Missoula floods. He was involved in the Latah Creek dig, helping other Eastern scientists discover the history behind a seasonal fishing camp long buried under water deposited sediments. Dale Stradling is survived by his wife, Teiko, of Cheney, his five children; his former wife Esther of Cheney, and eight grandchildren. In honor of Dale contributions may be made to the Jeremy Anderson Scholarship Fund at Eastern Washington University. Visitation is Friday, July 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. and July 12 from noon to 2 p.m. at Cheney Funeral Chapel, 1632 W.
