He was on a ship called the Saginaw Bay, and served as a cook. He also did some work with the big guns." Dale's time in service began with his induction at San Diego in 1943. He was trained in various military duties, and was stationed as a loader on a 40 MM anti-aircraft gun, and worked as a cook. Upon his discharge from active duty service in late 1945, Dale returned to the Durham area and worked as a foreman for Jessup Door Company for many years. He married Jewel Hundley in 1950, and was the father of two, Larry and Tim. Thelma also shared that Dale "...used to bring some of his buddies home on leave. Their families lived far from the west coast." "He died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 1996, in Palm Springs. "A native of Broderick, he was born Nov. 20, 1925, to hazel and Lewellyn Adkins. He attended Durham schools and served in the Navy during World War II. On Christmas eve 1950, he married Jewel Evelyn Hundley. She died in May 1986. "After the war, Adkins worked in the Chico and Durham areas, and at Claremont Mill at the airport. He retired from Jessup Door in the early 1980s. "He was a member of the local NRA. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved to travel. "Survivors include two sons, Larry of Paradise and Tim of Durham; four sisters, Thelma Snowden, Maxine Killingsworth and Doris Hiatt, all of Durham, and Gladys O'Farrell of Chico; and two grandchildren. Brusie Funeral Home made the arrangements."
