W. Fritschel officiating. The members of the Thornton American Legion and ex-service men participated at the services. The ensemble formed a guard of honor at church and at the grave. A firing squad gave a salute, and taps were sounded at the cemetery. The casket was draped with the American flag which later was presented to Mrs. Carl Floy to be given to the wife of the deceased. Dale Raymond Floy, the son of Carl and Etta Floy was born near Thornton, July 16, 1923. He became a member of St. Paul's American Lutheran church at Thornton, having been baptized as an infant and later, after instruction in the truths of the Bible confirmed. After he had graduated from Thornton high school in the class of 1940, he worked in this community until he enlisted in the U. S. Naval Reserve in November, 1942. He entered the service in April, 1943, and received his commission as ensign November 7, 1944, at Pensacola, Florida. He left this country for the Pacific area last July, but returned a little over a month ago to be placed on an inactive status. While at Pensacola he was married to Ensign Iona Mae Ytzen on December 28, 1944. It was only a short time that they had been able to live together, because of his overseas duty. Mrs. Floy was herself injured in the accident, as they were traveling home to their apartment in Mason City from Swaledale, and is at present at St. Mary'' hospital at Mason City receiving treatment for her injuries. The community mourns the tragic death of this young man of ability and promise, the country one of its able defenders, and the congregation one of its active members. Those mourning his untimely death, in addition to his parents and his wife, are his three brothers, Vernon, who was discharged from the service only a few days ago, Merlin, and Lee, who is still serving in the Pacific area; his 3 sisters, Irene of Clear Lake, and Ruth Ann as well as a large number of relatives, and a host of friends. Among those from out of town attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Byron Blackman of Clarion and Mrs. Geo. Friday of Fort Dodge. (obit courtesy of K Markwardt-Blakewell)
