Dale Spencer Dayton was born July 22, 1922, near Stratford, SD, to Arlo Spencer and Nettie (Thompson) Dayton. He attended country school in Rondell Township and graduated from Stratford High School in 1942. Dale then entered the U.S. Army on May 9, 1945, and served in the Pacific Theatre. He was honorably discharged Dec. 23, 1946. Dale was married to Betty Jean Stoltenberg on Nov. 11, 1948, near Stratford, SD, where he farmed until his retirement at the age of 62 and his son, Dana, took over the family farm. He was a carpenter and drove school bus for Brentford and Northwestern schools for 14 years. Dale also worked for the Milwaukee and St. Louis Railroad in Aberdeen for one year. Dale was a 40-year member of the United Church of Christ in Brentford serving as Deacon and Trustee. He became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in 1994 and served as an usher. Dale was a 30-year member of the La Prairie Township Board in Spink County, lifetime member of the Brentford Legion, lifetime member of the Redfield VFW, member of the Odd Fellow Lodge in Stratford, Aberdeen Elks Lodge #1046 and Hub City Good Sams where he was wagon master. Dale was avid fan of the Minnesota Twins, Northwestern and Northern State basketball and volleyball teams. He loved playing cards, amateur baseball, softball and basketball. His memory lives on with his wife, Betty, of Aberdeen, S.D.; two sons, Deene S. (Miki) Dayton of Pierre, S.D., and Dana L. Dayton of Stratford, S.D.; two daughters, Debra J. (Tom) Rieker of Aberdeen, S.D., and Denise J.D. (Thad) Allbee of Aberdeen, S.D.; two brothers, Ben S. (Shirley) Dayton of Aberdeen, S.D. and Donald (Faye) Dayton of Stratford, S.D.; two sisters, Mabel (Ed) Radcliff of California and Gladys (Delmar) Hansen of Aberdeen, S.D.; three grandchildren, Rebecca M. Rieker, Spencer J.T. Rieker and Matthew D. Dayton. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers, Earl Dayton, Robert Dayton and Ray Dayton, and two sisters, Arlys Ann Dayton and Hazel Dayton. Casket bearers are Dennis Dayton, Steven Dayton, Dale Ducheneau, Kevin Hansen, Hal Clemensen, Randy Stoltenberg and Pat Neilan. Published in the Aberdeen News on 10/17/2005.
