Entering the employ of the Santa Fe system, he became a fireman. When business was slack in 1933, Mr. Bentz moved to Hutchinson, and took a position with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in that city, March 3, 1934, he was united in marriage to Miss Tennie Stanfield, and took up his residence there. He was recalled to the engine service of the Santa Fe, in December, 1941 and following month, because of excessive business on the west coast, was loaned to the Coast Lines, where he met his death in the line of duty, June 25. He was a fireman on a locomotive pulling a a train on which was a company of United States Cadet fliers with their captain, when the engine ran onto a bridge the underpinnings of which had been burned, a circumstance which has caused an investigation as to the possibility that the fire was the work of saboteurs. The following message was presented by the captain:"Mrs. Bentz: I was a passenger on the train on which Mr. Bentz was a fireman, and I would like very much to sincerely convey to you on behalf of the passengers on the train our most heartfelt sympathy. This thought was expressed over and over again by our fliers as well as other passengers, Mr. Bentz died as truly a casualty of the war as any soldier and we will honor him. Please be assured of the sincerity of these words by all of us. [Signed] Capt. Ben Ferguson. Mr. Bentz united with the Christian church of this city at the age of 12 years, and was a member at the time of his death. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Fireman and Enginemen. Those who will miss him most keenly are his wife, little son, Bobbie Dallas, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Bentz. Account of the accident: Kansan, Friday, June 26, 1942 Two Killed in Santa Fe Wreck Parker, Ariz., June 26, (AP) Two men were killed and a third badly injured when a Santa Fe train rushing through the desert night with a group of army air corps cadets aboard, plunged through a fire swept bridge here late last night. The southern California defence command announced an investigation to determine whether saboteurs were responsible. The dead were announced by the Santa Fe here as engineer E. J. Murry, Parker, and fireman D. L. Bentz, Needles, Calif. Preliminary reports were that all the cadets, understood to number 42, escaped injury. Baggage man A. C. Pihl, Phoenix, Ariz., was reported seriously injured. Santa Fe spokesman said the bridge's underpinning had been burned and collapsed under the locomotive's weight. The engine and chair car went into a shallow wash, leaving two Pullmans on the track. The cadets were reported all passengers in the Pullmans. Beyond admitting that an inquiry into sabotage was under way, the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Los Angeles declined comment. Several bridge fires on Southern Pacific lines in the Imperial Valley, were under investigation by the FBI last month. The train was westbound between Phoenix, Ariz., and Cadiz, Calif. It connects with the west bound Santa Fe Scout at Parker for the run into Los Angeles. The accident occurred at 11:05 p.m. (PWT) Santa Fe spokesman said the last train traversing the bridge successfully crossed about noon yesterday.
