King Staff Reporter A 75-year-old Mount Pleasant man drowned in Charleston Harbor yesterday afternoon after his small outboard motorboat capsized. Victim of the boating accident was Dallas S. Deer of 506 Speights St., Mount Pleasant. His companion on a fishing tip, 45-year-old Durward Russell Meeks of Gainseville, Ga., was rescued by Coast Guardsmen after a Navy plane spotted the overturned boat. The Gainesville store owner stepped from a 40-foot cutter at Charleston Coast Guard Base barefoot, numbed with shock, but uninjured. He said he was visiting Deer, his wife's uncle, and they were anchoring about 30 feet inside the south jetty when the 15-foot runabout boat overturned. "I don't really know what happened," he said. "I threw the anchor over the stern. Suddenly water came over the transom and the boat went down and capsized. It must have been a wave or wake that sank us." Meeks said he was thrown clear of the boat and when he surfaced there was no sign of his companion. Supported by a life jacket, Meeks was in the water for several minutes when a Navy aircraft sighted him. The pilot dropped a life raft then radioed the control tower of Charleston Air Force Base. The time: 1:08 p.m. Only six minutes later the first of three Coast Guard cutters was on the way to the rescue. Meeks was picked up at 1:30 p.m. but he stayed with the Coast Guardsmen for the next three hours helping to search the area for Deer. The boat with the survivor was the last to leave the search area – and unknown to Meeks or the crew the victim was already at Coast Guard Base lying in the bottom of the salvaged boat. Michael P. Stokes, boatswain's mate third-class who was in charge of a 30-foot launch, said that when he reached Deer's boat only two feet of the bow section was above water. "We attached a towline then went ahead fast to draw it out of the water. It rolled two or three times before it stayed upright," he said. "We maintained as fast speed all the way to the base, fearing that if we slackened our pace and the boat was holed, she would sink. "It was not until we got back to the base we discovered Mr. Deer's body in it. Presumably he was trapped underneath when the craft capsized." Charleston County Coroner Jennings Cauthen last night ruled Deer's death as an "accidental drowning." "This is the 33rd drowning in the county so far this year and we usually average only 20 a year," Cauthen said. Funeral services for Mr. Deer will be announced by Stuhr's. He was born July 6, 1890 in Ulmer, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas O. [sic] Deer. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant. Mr. Deer was retired. Surviving are: his widow, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Allen Deer; a daughter, Mrs. H. L. Mellichamp Jr., of Mount Pleasant; three sons, Thomas O. Deer of Mount Pleasant, Howard A. Deer of Belvedere, and Dalls [sic] S. Deer Jr. of Mount Pleasant; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; six brothers; and three sisters. Deer Funeral Services for Dallas Simmons Deer, 75, of 506 Speights St., Mount Pleasant, will be held today at 2 p.m. at Sturh's Downtown Funeral Chapel with the Rev. William D. Conner officiating. Burial will be in Christ Churchyard, Six Mile, Mount Pleasant. Mr. Deer drowned Tuesday when the boat from which he was fishing sank near the jetties in Charleston Harbor. Active pallbearers will be Leonard Allen, Calhoun Allen, William Barnes, Thomas Deer, Gene Brandt and Henry Deer. Honorary pallbearers will be officers of Etiwan Lodge No. 95, AFM, deacons of First Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant and members of Fellowship Sunday School class. Mr. Deer was born July 6, 1890 in Ulmer, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas O. [sic] Deer. Surviving are: his widow, one daughter, three sons, three sisters, six brothers, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
