The Clergymen in charge of the services were: Rev. Emmett Russell of Ashland; Rev. D. S. Jenks of Manchester, executive secretary of the Baptist State Convention, and Rev. Fred Fitzpatrick of Belmont. Members of different lodges attended the services in a body. The beautiful display of flowers was a tribute to Mr. Carey. The honorary bearers were M. C. Blake, W. B. Brown, W. F. Hardy, O. A. Brown, F. O. Kelley and H. F. Bryant. The carriers were H. S. Huckins of Plymouth, J. E. Morrison, H. R. Spaulding, Don Simons, F. W. Merrow and Ralph Hinds. The stores were closed during the services and besides the townspeople present there were many from out of town at the services also. He had been in poor health for some time. He has been a very prominent Ashland resident most of his life. Mr. Carey was born in Jay, Vt. March 30, 1859. At the age of 16 years he left home and went to work in Concord and Penacook. In 1883 he came to Ashland and went to work for the firm of Hodgdon and Pollard, where he worked until 1898, when he went into business for himself, forming the concern known as The Carey Furniture Company, which he owned at the time of his death. He was baptized and united with the Ashland Baptist church in 1884. He has been one of the deacons of the church for 35 years, treasurer for 39 years, and superintendent of Sunday school about 20 years. He was trustee of the united Baptist convention in New Hampshire for a number of years. He also served the town of Ashland as a selectman and overseer of the poor, and member of the school board for several years. On October 26, 1886, he married Martha C. Smith. He is survived by the widow, one son, Leslie R., of Reading, Mass., and one sister, Mrs. Etta Emerson of Detroit, Mich. Mr. Carey was affiliated with Mt. Prospect Lodge of Masons, Pemigewasset Chapter, Omega Council; Pilgrim Commandery, Rebekah Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., Mt. Hope Chapter, O. E. S., Grafton Lodge of Odd Fellows.
