Paulding, 64-year-old resident of route 1, was almost instantly killed Wednesday evening by the car of Carl Nosko, 30, route 2, Centralia. The pedestrian's death was the first traffic fatality during 1945 for Centralia, and the 11th so far for Lewis county. With the driver of the car held under technical arrest and Lewis County Prosecutor John Pahesko Thursday continued investigation of the fatality and asked eyewitnesses of the accident to call at the Centralia police station as soon as possible. Victim Hurled 50 feet The traffic death came shortly before 6:30 p.m. as Paulding left the east curb in the middle of the block and started west across the street. Officers said he was not in the regular pedestrian lane, and Nosko, going north, swung out to pass a car and struck Paulding. The force of the impact hurled the victim almost 50 feet, Centralia police said. Paulding died almost instantly, both legs and an arm and his skull being fractured, and he was badly crushed. Whether a coroner's inquest will be held depends upon the evidence being gathered from witnesses, the prosecutor said, and he added one item being checked was the speed of Nosko's car at the time of the accident. Nosko told officers he was not driving fast, but several witnesses have disagreed with the statement. Driver is War Veteran Nosko was recently discharged from army service after returning home from months of service with the 15th Air force in the Mediterranean theater. Paulding, who lived by himself at an auto camp north of Centralia, was a native of the state, having been born April 18, 1881. Only known survivor is a sister, Mrs. Leonora Alexander, of Aberdeen. The body is at the Newell-Hoerling mortuary.
