Engineer - Dan Butcher, Who Once Tried Suicide Is Dead Here - Dan Butcher, 45, locomotive engineer on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad, who attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat January 16, died in a Sioux City hospital Friday. Butcher, whose home was at 612 West Sixth street, had been a resident of Sioux City 20 years. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. Police who were called to the Butcher home early in the morning of Sunday, January 16, found the engineer in a bathtub, bleeding from a deep gash in his throat. Members of his family said it was self inflicted. A police surgeon gave him care and he was taken to St. Vincent’s hospital. The day following Butcher attempted to reopen the cut in his throat, physicians said, but was unsuccessful. As soon as the wound was healed, he was taken to the state hospital for the insane at Cherokee. Physicians said his death Friday was not due to the suicide attempt. Surviving Mr. Butcher are his widow, Mrs. Margaret Butcher, and three sons, Clyde, Clifford and Kenneth. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Butcher, live at Elk Point, S. D. He has two brothers, Floyd and Jesse, of Sioux City, and four sisters. They are: Mrs. Frank Earl, Sioux City; Mrs. E. O. Wilson, Watertown, S. D.; Mrs. Fern Chicoine, Jefferson, S. D.; Mrs. Nellie Sargent, Akron, Ia. The body is at Westcott’s undertaking parlors, pending arrangements. Sixth street, who died Thursday, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Westcott’s chapel, with the Rev. W. A. Peterson, pastor of Riverside Methodist Episcopal church, officiating.
