Read More	Obituary from Minot Daily News, Monday, January 9, 1961: "DOUGHERTY, EX-POLICE CHIEF, DIES" Dan Dougherty, 81, of 611-1st St. S.E. former Minot chief of police, died today a a Minot hospital where he had been a patient since December 21. A longtime resident of Minot and a property owner, he had been retired for a number of years. His career in law enforcement work covered two period as chief of police, service with the Ward county sheriff's office, the Great Northern railway's special investigation department and the Federal Alcohol Tax Unit. When he first came to Minot, shortly after the turn of the century, he was employed with the Russel Miller Milling Company. He served for a period as a deputy sheriff before joining the Minot police force and was appointed chief of police in 1914. He served for five years in that capacity, resigning in September 1919 to take a job as special agent for the Great Northern in Montana. He returned to Minot and in 1923 was again named chief, serving until 1925. He served subsequently with the alcohol tax unit. Mr. Dougherty re-entered service of Great Northern in April, 1945, and was employed at the car shop in Minot until May 21, 1953. He retired, following two years of leave because of illness, on June 21, 1955. His police service spanned a period when Minot was a rough-and-tumble town, dealing with disturbances touched off by International Workers of the World in his early tenure and rum runners in the 1920s. He also joined federal agents on raids aimed at halting the smuggling of narcotics into the U.S. from Canada. He was a brother of the late Nellie Dougherty who served as postmaster at Minot from 1933 to 1953. She retired in 1953 for reasons of health and died two years late. He is survived by two sisters, Grace Dougherty and Mrs. Beata Kinsella of Minot and a brother, James, of Los Angeles, Calif. Thompson Larson Funeral Home is handling arrangements."
