Daniel (pronounced Dan'l) Ezekiel McClenny was the son of James W. and Sarah Holloman McClenny was born May 28, 1883, in Grantham Township, Wayne County in the Rhodes community. He was converted in his youth and became a member of Friends at Woodland. When Rhodes Monthly meeting was established he moved his membership to that meeting. Daniel (pronounced Dan'l) Ezekiel McClenny was the son of James W. and Sarah Holloman McClenny was born May 28, 1883, in Grantham Township, Wayne County in the Rhodes community. He was converted in his youth and became a member of Friends at Woodland. When Rhodes Monthly meeting was established he moved his membership to that meeting. His early life was especially influenced by the ministry of Mary C. Woody, Robert Pelt, and Dewitt Foster. He was a student at Kings Business College in Raleigh for some time. Soon afterward he was married to Johnnie Mabel Rose, October 26, 1911, who with two foster sons survive him. [ note that he and his wife adopted his nephew, Samuel Fox McClenny after his biological mother died. They later adopted a baby who is believed to be the biological son of Sallie Venitia Harrell, his niece. The father is believed to be William Benjamen Sutton who married Mae Harrell] ~Rhesa Hart After marriage, he made Goldsboro his home except for short periods he lived in other places including Raleigh, Durham, and New Bern. In business, he was associated with National Life Insurance Company for more than twenty-five years or more. For the past seventeen years, he had been a member of the Goldsboro Monthly Meeting. [you may also note that he was a Census taker and his name is on many of the censuses] His life was a testimony to the love of God and his fellowmen. He was faithful in attendance at the regular services of the church and helpful in service he could render. He was the treasurer of the church at the time of his death. Always friendly, kind, gentle, and humble he numbered his friends almost by his acquaintances and there were many of these both white and colored who mourned with his family the loss of their loved one. Daniel McClenny never possessed the radiant health and physical strength with which many people are blessed. He endured his afflictions and illness with the sweetness of spirit which befits a Christian and was hopeful of a return of strength almost to the end. Yet, he asserted his readiness and willingness to go on, if it was the Lord's will. Always interested in the work of the church at home and on foreign fields of service, it was his request that flowers not be sent at this death but rather the money be sent to the missionaries to further the Gospel on the field, consequently a fund was raised in his memory and sent to the Friends Mission Hospital in Africa to be applied on payment for a water system which was so badly needed there. On Friday afternoon, March 23rd, 1945, after months of illness and suffering, he quietly departed this life, to become one of the throngs who awaits the second coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. With the poet we can say: "They are not dead who live in hearts they leave behind. In those whom they have blessed. They live life again, and shall live through the years, eternal life, and grow each day more beautiful. As time declares their good, forgets the rest- and proves their immortality."
