Read More	Minnie Viola McClenny Sutton , the youngest daughter of James William and Sarah Holloman McClenny was born 5 miles from Grantham, between Corbett Hill and Dudley, on December 5, 1887. She met her future husband at as a young teenager in the Dudley area of Wayne County while babysitting her sister's children during the summer. She would do this so Metta McClenny Harrell could help her husband in the field. Bernice was living with his sister Dora who was a neighbor of the Harrells at the time and stopped in at the Harrell a Place to get some cold water since he was working in a field nearby. Later, Minnie went with her sister to visit to the Joyners and after they left, Bernice told his sister that she must have a giggle box. She giggled so much that she fell off a chest she was sitting on. As they became more acquainted with each other they began to court; which mostly consisted of going to church. Education and Marriage at age 15 Minnie attended school up until the 7th grade at Union Academy which was located on Amy Grantham Plantation. After 4 months of free school each year, her father and other men in the community hired a teacher for an extended school session paid for by families in the community at the rate of five cents per student per day. Since the school only went up to the 7th grade, she had made arrangements to board so that she could further her education, probably Rose Hill High, in a different city. Her father had bought her two trunks to pack her things in, but one morning on the way to church Bernice asked her " if she would have him?" and added, "and bake him biscuits everyday?"He won her heart and their fate was sealed on February 4, 1903. They got married near Rhodes Friends Church at the home of her parents by the Rev. John Wright Rose. From Methodist to Quaker Minnie and the rest of the McClenny were not birthright Quakers. J.W. McClenny, Sarah Elizabeth, Margaret Alice, Samuel Festus, Minnie Viola & Eliza Jane Crow McClenny joined the Woodland Monthly Meeting on October 21, 1899. Sharecroppers Wife They started their life together living in a small house on his sister Dora's farm in Wayne County. While Dora's first husband, Kabo Joyner, was dying he made Bernice promise to not let his wife go hungry. So when they lived and helped Dora with her farm until she remarried. Their oldest child, Walton was born there. They then moved to Mose Joyner's farm and lived there for 9 months. Mose was Kabo Joyner's brother, and that's where their daughter Mittie was born. Then they moved to Grantham Township and moved into "Fields Place" as tenant farmers for about 13 years. While at the Fields Place Sallie, Alton, Julia, Mary Alice, and Bernice were born. She suffered a miscarriage between Sallie and Alton. When they left "Fields Place", they moved to Henry Best Farm where they lived for almost 3 years. While there, David was born. The Move to Rosewood Community Walton and Mittie had graduated from the 7th grade at Union Academy and were ready for high school. Bernice had been orphaned young and only got a 3rd-grade education, so it was a high priority to then that they move to an area in Wayne County that offered a high school education. Rosewood High School became the first consolidated high school in the country. Bernice heard about a farm in the Rosewood community and found out the owners ( two Swinson sisters) were looking for a tenant to farm their land. The family moved to there things from Grantham to the " Swinson Place" using only a mule and wagon. Allie Marsalette (Marcie) was the first to be born at the Swinson Place. They called her "Leet" when she was young. The Great Depression and Bernice's Sister, Kate Dies While they lived at the Swinson Place, Bernice's sister Kate died and Bernice became the guardian of her children. They all moved in except Weisie, who was married. After selling his sisters house, farm animals and household goods he put the money in the bank to give to them when they became of age. The Depression hit and the "banks busted", much of the money was lost. The three smaller children went to the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh, N.C. Having been orphaned as a child himself, I'm sure this was a hard decision to make, but he had barely enough to feed his own children. He worked and made good on the money that was loss ans each child got $700.00 when they became of age. In 1938, they saved up enough money to buy their own farm with a small framed house. It was in pretty bad shape because it had not been tended to in 7 years. He paid $2,500 or $3,000.00 for it. Their son Bernice bought adjoing land. When asked for their advice for newlyweds they said " always remember the promises made to each other and take the Bible as a daily guide". This was in an article published in the 1972 Goldsboro Argus for their 69th Wedding Anniversary ********** Obituary Mrs. Minnie McClenny Sutton, 99, of Rt 5, Goldsboro, died this morning in Medical Park Nursing Center, Mount Olive. She was born Dec. 6, 1887, to James W. McClenny, a Confederate Civil War veteran, and Sarah Holloman McClenny. She was the widow of Bernice L. Sutton and was affectionately known in the Rosewood Community as "Mama Sutton." She was a member of the Goldsboro Friends Meeting. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home chapel with M. Stephen Stout officiating. The burial will be in Wayne Memorial Park. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. She is survived by two sons, Claxton M. Sutton of Rosewood and David A. Sutton of Raleigh; eight daughters, Mrs. Mittie S. Brock, Mrs. Sallie Hollowel, Mrs. Julia S. Fail, Mrs. Mary S. Smith, Mrs. Dorothy S Carraway, and Mrs. Rachel S. Brasswell, all of Goldsboro, Mrs. Marcie S. Guill of Danville, Va., and Mrs. Jean S. Langley of Clayton; 36 grandchildren; 36 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren.
